Matthew Dearing

Research AssociateMatt Dearing

Matthew Dearing is a Research Associate with the Program for Culture and Conflict Studies at NPS focusing on IED trends and analysis, information operations and insurgent strategies in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Prior to joining NPS, Matt served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. He traveled frequently in the Corps, serving at US embassies in Kinshasa, Pretoria, Minsk, Kiev and Bucharest.

In 2006, Matt earned a B.A. in International Political Economy at the University of California Berkeley. He is currently enrolled in the M.A. Program at the Naval Postgraduate School in Regional Security Studies. His thesis focuses on female suicide bombers and the implications of their involvement in Afghanistan. Matt recently participated in a two-month research trip in Afghanistan sponsored by JIEDDO.

Matt conducts a variety of research tasks for the program to include a monthly open source analysis of IED events and trends, addresses requests for information from a variety of government and non-government organizations, and compiles daily analytical assessments of political and security events in South Asia. Matt also serves as the editor of our journal, The Culture & Conflict Review.
