Accommodations Arrival in Monterey - The Monterey Peninsula Airport (MRY) is located approximately three miles from the Naval Postgraduate School. Yellow Cab taxi service (831 646-1234) is readily available from the airport to lodging accommodations (Yellow Cab is the only taxi service authorized to enter the base). International participants will be met at the airport by a faculty member and transported to BOQ lodging. Participants should schedule their arrival in Monterey no earlier than Saturday and no later than 1730 on Sunday. Lodging - Navy Gateway Inns & Suites - Particpants can now experience the beautiful architecture and craftsmanship of the 1880s carefully preserved in the newly renovated Hotel Del Monte. DRMI will reserve a room for each participant. The BOQ office will make the individual room assignments. The type and cost of rooms are:
No family quarters are available on base. The BOQ office assesses a per person, per day extra charge - excluding spouse. Due to a lack of family facilities, as well as a lack of soundproofing between rooms, bringing young children is strongly discouraged. Short-term rentals off the base are scarce and expensive ($2000 to $4000 per month). Further information may be found at: www.montereyrentals.com. Transportation - No government transportation is available. DRMI lecture hall and classrooms are located within walking distance of the BOQ. Commercial bus transportation and rental cars are available in Monterey. Participants must have a valid driver's license to drive in California. A major credit card is normally required to rent a car. Each participant's name will be submitted to the NPS gate access list. Please carry one form of ID at all times. (International Participants - carry ITO and one picture ID until your US ID card is issued). Private Vehicles - If you drive your own vehicle or rent one while you are attending the course, limited parking is available at NPS. Be careful not to park in reserved areas - a violation ticket is $50.00. Seat belts must be worn while driving. Cells phones are not allowed to be used when driving on base. Tickets are issued for all traffic violations on Naval Postgraduate School grounds. Clothing - The dress code at NPS is business casual. While attending class men wear slacks and shirts with collars or polo shirts; women may wear "equivalent" clothing, such as slacks or skirts and sweaters or blouses. Jeans, shorts, tee shirts, and athletic wear are not authorized during class sessions. Uniforms are not worn. IDMC & SIDMC: Coat and tie (or national dress) is required for the opening and closing receptions, field trip and other official functions. Medium weight clothing is recommended. The year-round climate of the Monterey Peninsula is characterized by temperatures ranging from 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 20 degrees Celsius) during the daytime, and from 10 to 20 degrees (F) cooler at night. Medical/Dental Facilities - Medical services are available for U.S. military and military international participants at the U.S. Army PRIMUS Clinic at the Presidio of Monterey (POM). Same day appointments are not always available. It is recommended that participants go to Sick Call (0700 to 0830) Monday through Friday. Military International participants should bring their ID card and a copy of their Invitational Travel Orders (ITO). U.S. and international civilians must seek medical care from a civilian physician. Emergency dental services are available for U.S. military and NATO international participants. The Dental Lab is located on the fourth floor of Herrmann Hall. U.S. civilians and non-NATO participants must seek dental care from a local civilian dentist. NPS Facilities and Services Subsistence: Meals may be purchased in the El Prado Dining Room, located on the ground floor of Herrmann Hall, Del Monte Café, located in the academic quad and Gill's Fresh Grill, located at the Navy Exchange. Rates vary according to menu selection. Meals are served Monday through Friday. Limited meal service is available on Sat/Sun (1600-2100) in the Trident Room (located on the ground floor of Herrmann Hall). The Monterey Peninsula area also has many excellent restaurants. The Navy Exchange Retail Store is a short walk from the BOQ. The Exchange facilities also include a barber shop, laundry and dry cleaning services, a branch of NFCU and an automobile service station. A U.S. Post Office is conveniently located across from the Navy Exchange. Protestant and Catholic services are held on the Naval Postgraduate School grounds. Services for these and other faiths are also available in the local community. A Muslim prayer room is also located on the grounds of the Naval Postgraduate School. Recreation - The Morale Welfare & Recreation/Information Tickets & Tours (MWR/ITT) Recreation Office is located on the first floor of Herrmann Hall (across from the quarterdeck). Personnel in this office can provide information and answer questions concerning the availability and use of the Postgraduate School facilities as well as upcoming tours, attractions, and special events. Recreation facilities include a gymnasium, tennis courts, golf, sailing, and flying. Racquetball and squash courts, Nautilus equipment, and exercise classes are available in the gymnasium. Golf equipment may be rented at the Golf Course. Bike rentals are also available at the gym. Gym membership is free for all DRMI participants. The card allows use of towels, gym gear issue, and all fitness activities (tennis, racquetball and squash courts, Nautilus and free weight rooms, basketball court, and sauna). The Monterey Sports Center located in downtown Monterey has an indoor pool available for use for a fee. The golf course maintains a separate schedule of fees. Tennis courts must be reserved at least one day in advance at the Recreation Office. Squash and racquetball courts have sign-up sheets in the Gymnasium. DRMI Facilities and Services Academic Facilities - All lectures are conducted in the Quad Academic Auditorium, Bldg. 247. Seminar discussions (and the TEMPO Military game) are held in the discussion rooms located in Halligan Hall (Bldg 234). The mailing address while attending the course will be: Your name DRMI 699 Dyer Rd Rm M5 Naval Postgraduate School Monterey, CA 93943 Incoming mail is posted in the participant mailboxes Monday through Friday. Mail delivery service is not available on weekends. Administrative Fee - A one-time fee will be collected from each participant to help defray expenses of the coffee mess, your personal coffee cup, the class photograph, and the opening and closing receptions. This fee should be paid in the administrative office during the first week of the course. Class Photo - During the first week of the course a group photograph of the class will be taken and each participant will be provided a copy. Identification Cards - An identification card will be issued to international participants authorizing use of all U.S. military facilities. These cards expire at the end of the course and must be returned before you depart. DRMI admin office will arrange your ID card appointment. U.S. civilian participants will be issued a navy exchange privilege card - please note on your entry questionnaire if you require one. Laptop Computers - Participants who own laptop computers are welcome to bring them to Monterey. However, such computers are not necessary, and they are not permitted to be used during class. DRMI also has a participant computer lab with 15 Windows XP-based PCs. The PCs are loaded with software we use at DRMI, as well as the Microsoft Office Suite. The PCs default print to a LaserJet printer located in the room. All of the computers can burn CDs. The computer room is open 24 hours/7 days a week. Internet connections for personal laptop computers are available in the lab. Smoking - No smoking is permitted inside any building on base. You must smoke a minimum of 15 feet from any building. Outside Activities - Time is available after class and particularly on weekends to participate in various athletic, cultural, or recreational activities. These activities are voluntary and at the participant's own expense. A great source of information about activities in the local Monterey Peninsula area can be found at www.monterey.com. Check the "Specials" option for great bargains in the area. Certificates - Certificates of Completion are presented to participants at the close of their course. Departure DRMC participants will complete the course no later than 1230 on the last day. Return flights should be scheduled after 1200 or the next day. IDMC & SIDMC participants will complete the course NLT 1500 on the last day. Return flights should be scheduled after 1500 or the next day. All other courses: Return flights should be scheduled the day after the course completion date. Administrative Services - The administrative office of DRMI manages quota control, BOQ arrangements, assists with check-in and check-out procedures, arranges for issuance of identification and privilege cards, processes International living allowance; return tickets, as well as all other administrative matters.
