Certificate in ASW Fundamentals (Curriculum 274)

The curriculum for the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Certificate Program supports the needs of the Navy in ASW, and complements existing warfare ASW training and qualification.

The ASW Certificate Program provides a science and engineering foundation which covers fundamental concepts in four areas: Physical Oceanography, Signal Processing, Operations Research, and Engineering Acoustics. These subjects are the educational cornerstone for this highly interdisciplinary certificate program.

Anti-Submarine Warfare encompasses multiple disciplines. The ASW Certificate is a distance Learning curriculum that consists of four fully accredited courses delivered by multiple modes of instruction. Offered over a one-year period, these courses develop critical analytic skills and understanding of fundamental principles applied in ASW.

Program Schedule

The following are the upcoming scheduled quarters for acceptance of new students into the ASW program: Spring (AY09Q3)

Note: this information is subject to change without notice.

For information about the specific start dates for the listed quarters, please refer to the NPS Academic Calendar.

Curriculum

  • EC2450 - Accelerated Review of Signals and Systems
  • OC2930 - Introduction to Oceanography for Undersea Warfare
  • OS3680 - Naval Tactical Analysis
  • PH2401 - Introduction to the Sonar Equations
  • Note: All courses in this program have been approved by the NPS Academic Council. However, this program has not yet been approved as a NPS official certificate program. You will receive a certificate on successful completion of the program, and the courses, not the certificate title, will appear on your transcript. For further information, please contact the Registrars office.

    NPS Follow-on Resident Program(s):

Master of Science in Undersea Warfare (Curriculum 525)

Students with an ASW Certificate are well positioned to continue their education and professional development by pursuing a Masters degree through Undersea Warfare (USW) curriculum at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). This highly interdisciplinary program focuses on engineering fundamentals, physical principles, operations research, and systems analysis that contribute to USW, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and mine warfare (MIW) operational employment. In most cases, students qualify for 1 quarter of credit toward a Masters degree, if assigned to NPS as a resident student.

Students can choose from one of five disciplines:

    • Operations Research
    • Physical Oceanography
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Engineering Acoustics
    • Applied Science

The Undersea Warfare Curriculum educates officers in the engineering fundamentals, physical principles and analytical concepts that govern operational employment of undersea warfare (USW) sensors and weapons systems. This program is interdisciplinary and integrates: mathematics, physics, acoustics, electrical engineering, oceanography, operations analysis, human factors, computer science and meteorology. The academic content divides naturally into four major specialty areas: Applied Physics with emphasis on underwater acoustics and weapons, Physical Oceanography with emphasis on environmental factors affecting sonic and radiative surveillance, Engineering Acoustics with emphasis on signal processing, Operations Analysis with emphasis on tactical applications and decision analysis. The program is administered by the Undersea Warfare Academic Group, composed of faculty from supporting academic departments at NPS.

This curriculum is designed to allow the student to meet all of the requirements for Navy PME (as established by the Chief of Naval Operations) and for Joint PME (as established by the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff) for Intermediate Level Professional Military Education.
