The Cebrowski Institute is pleased to announce
that Assistant Professor Karen Guttieri has joined the Institute. Guttieri is a stability operations and civil affairs specialist who joined the NPS in 2001 after conducting post-doctoral research at Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) A native of California, Guttieri earned her doctorate the the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
Guttieri's research and teaching ojectives are to build knowledge and skills for American and international participants in Stability, Security, Transition and Reconstruction. Research interests in military operations in civilian environments include specific focus on issues of effectiveneness, military organizational learning and civil-military relations. She was recognized for teaching excellence in 2002 and has participated in curriculum developmenet as well as distributed and in-residence course construction.
Recent publication titles include the following: Interim Governments (co-edited volume with Jessica Piombo now in press with the US Institute of Peace), "Unlearning War: U.S. Military Experience with Stability Operations," (in Organizational Learning in the Global Context, 2006). "Strategic Insights on Humanitarian Space in Insecure Environments: A Shifting Paradigm" (Nov. 2005) "Elections in Iraq: Managing Expectations" (Feb. 2005) "Homeland Security and US Civil-Military Relations" (Aug. 2003) and "Post-Conflict Iraq: Prospects and Problems" (Feb. 2003).
Dr. Guttieri has participated in United States and United Nations peacekeeping exercises, completed the Civil-Miltary Cooperation in Modern Peacekeeping Course at the Lester B. Pearson International Peacekeeping Training Centre; the Joint Civil-Miltary Operations Course at the Joint Special Operations University; and World Vision's Level II Security Management Training Course.
