James A. Russell appointed Managing Editor
NSA News Brief
May 25, 2006−Monterey, California: The Center for Contemporary Conflict at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of James A. Russell as Managing Editor of Strategic Insights.
Strategic Insights, the e-journal published by the Center for Contemporary Conflict, has been published since March 2002, covering the most important issues, events, and strategic challenges of the post 9/11 era. Russell replaces Peter R. Lavoy, the founding Executive Editor of Strategic Insights, and James J. Wirtz, who served with Lavoy as co-Executive Editor. Dr. Lavoy will continue to serve as CCC Director and will remain involved with the journal.
The change in editors for the journal will also signal a new format that our subscribers will see in print. Starting with the July issue, Strategic Insights will now be published once every two months. The issues will concentrate on specific subjects, allowing us to go into more depth for our readers. Our subscribers can expect to see issues appearing over the next several months that will focus on such subjects as: modeling terrorist groups; globalization and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; challenges of a nuclear North Korea; and, civil-military relations in the post-9/11 environment. We will still publish occasional pieces focusing on current issues and events, but the bulk of the journal will focus on specific themes for each issue.
Russell is a senior lecturer in the Department of National Security Affairs, where he teaches courses on Middle East security affairs, terrorism, and national security strategy. He is a prolific writer and frequent contributor to the pages of Strategic Insights. Mr. Russell edited Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East: Directions and Policy Options in the New Century, which was published by Palgrave/MacMillan in January 2006. Russell’s articles have appeared in the Cambridge Review of International Affairs, Comparative Strategy, Middle East Policy, Middle East Review of International Affairs, Joint Forces Quarterly, Naval War College Review, the Nonproliferation Review and Contemporary Security Policy. Mr. Russell also serves as a referee for articles submitted to a variety of scholarly journals.
