CCS Launches New Web Resource on Human Terrain in Afghanistan

CCS Press Release

Monterey, Calif. (October 12, 2007)The Program for Culture and Conflict Studies (CCS) is pleased to announce the publication of a new web resource for those studying the human terrain in Afghanistan:

http://www.nps.edu/Programs/CCS/

According to Professor Thomas H. Johnson, CCS Director, “There’s an absolute lack of reliable and up-to-date information regarding tribal and human dynamics in Afghanistan. This will be an amazing resource, both for the people in-country, and for those outside Afghanistan who want a deeper understanding of the people there. Beginning with Eastern Afghanistan, we want to provide the most current and comprehensive picture of the human terrain out there.”

Covering tribes, politics, trends, and people, the website—a 21st century gazetteer, provides data, analysis, and maps not available anywhere else. In later versions the gazetteer will expand to other regions of Afghanistan.

The main foci of the gazetteer are: tribes and ethnic identities; political parties and actors; current trends and events; and opium trends and analysis. Overviews exist for every province, and the website contains a number of academic papers, authored by CCS and others, on particular issues, groups, and policies shaping events in Afghanistan.

With a dedicated staff, and led by Prof. Thomas Johnson, the gazetteer is a living document, and will be updated and expanded as research continues and new information becomes available.
