Equipping tomorrow's military and civilian leaders to tackle emerging security challenges

The Naval Postgraduate School's department of National Security Affairs (NSA) specializes in the study of international relations, security policy, and regional studies. The department brings together students from the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, National Guard, various civilian agencies, and  international officers from dozens of countries in an engaging learning environment designed to encourage critical thinking and intellectual independence.

Nearly three hundred graduate students are in residence at any time and can choose among a range of fully-accredited curricula. Their studies can also include work toward Joint Professional Military Education Phase I certification, through a separate program administered by the Naval War College on the NPS campus. The student body integrates both international and American students throughout the bulk of its curricula, deepening opportunities for enhancing cultural awareness. Additionally, the department’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security has partnered with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's National Preparedness Directorate, FEMA, to provide graduate education to eligible local, state, tribal, and federal officials working in homeland security fields through an innovative hybrid learning model.

National Security Affairs offers a number of non-degree programs for deploying and overseas military personnel through the Regional Security Education Program (RSEP) and the Joint Foreign Area Officer Skill Sustainment Program (JFSSP). NSA also conducts cutting-edge research through its Center on Contemporary Conflict and program for Culture and Conflict Studies, and coordinates with the NPS School of International Graduate Studies Center for Civil-military Relations.

The department is located on the beautiful Naval Postgraduate School campus in Monterey, CA. The Monterey Bay is an area renowned for its ecological diversity and wealth of recreational activities, which students can take full advantage of while enrolled at NPS.
