Biography
Jeffrey W. Knopf has taught at the Naval Postgraduate School since Fall 2000. Dr. Knopf received a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University (1991) as well as an MA from Stanford and a BA from Harvard University. Before joining NPS, Dr. Knopf was a Senior Research Associate at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (1998-2000) and an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the University of Southern California (1991-1998). Dr. Knopf was also the Editor of The Nonproliferation Review from 1998-2000. In the mid-1980s, he worked in Washington, DC, as a research analyst at the Investor Responsibility Research Center and the Defense Budget Project.
Dr. Knopf's teaching and research interests include nuclear arms control and non-proliferation, the effectiveness of strategies such as deterrence and assurance, the relationship between public opinion and foreign policy, and international relations theory. Dr. Knopf's primary current research project is on the sources and effectiveness of multilateral cooperation on non-proliferation.
Dr. Knopf is the author of Domestic Society and International Cooperation: The Impact of Protest on US Arms Control Policy (Cambridge University Press, 1998), the co-author of US Arms Exports: Policies and Contractors (Ballinger Publishing Co., 1988), and the editor of Security Assurances and Nuclear Nonproliferation (Stanford University Press, forthcoming). He has also published articles in Contemporary Security Policy, International Organization, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research, Nonproliferation Review, Security Studies, Review of International Studies, and various edited books. His article "The Fourth Wave in Deterrence Research" received the Bernard Brodie Prize for the best article in Contemporary Security Policy in 2010. Dr. Knopf was also an invited speaker at the 2011 US Strategic Command Deterrence Symposium.
