Biography
Dr. Edward A. Olsen is a Professor of National Security Affairs with a specialization in Asian Studies. He has been with the Naval Postgraduate School since 1980. Prior to coming to NPS, Dr. Olsen taught International Relations at George Williams College, and served for five years as a Political Intelligence Analyst (Japan/Korea) with the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence & Research (INR), Office of East Asian & Pacific Affairs.

Dr. Olsen completed a B.A. in History at UCLA, an M.A. in East Asian Studies at U.C. Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in International Studies at The American University, School of International Service. He also earned a Certificate from Stanford University's Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Tokyo.

Dr. Olsen has authored eight books and six monographs, and edited four books. His most recent books are Korea, The Divided Nation (Praeger Security International, 2005); Hanmi Kwangae Ui Sae Jipyong/New Horizons of U.S./Korea Relations (Seoul: Ingansarang, 2003); U.S. National Defense for the Twenty First Century (Frank Cass, 2002); and Toward Normalizing U.S.-Korean Relations: In Due Course? (Lynne Rienner, 2002).

Dr. Olsen has also authored over one hundred journal articles, 64 book chapters, and 90 op-ed pieces in the U.S. and Asian media.

Among his recent articles are: "Options for a Divided Korea," Military.com, December 9, 2005; "Transforming U.S. Policy Toward Korean Unification, Creating a New U.S.-'U.K.' Special Relationship," Korea and World Affairs, Summer 2005; "U.S. Policy Planning Toward Korean Unification: A New Approach," International Journal of Korean Unification Studies, Summer 2005; "U.S.-North Korean Relations: Foreign Policy Dilemmas," North Korean Review, Fall 2005; "U.S.-North Korea Relations: The Nuclear Issue," Pacific Focus, Fall 2005; "Solving U.S. Problems in Korea Through Unification," Chronicles, November 2005. He also recently authored a monograph titled "Homeland Security: Learning from Japan," published by the Independent Institute.
