Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Positions

The OR Department invites applications for 1-year Postdoctoral positions in operations research with the possibility for extending the tenure. The positions consist of a combination of research and teaching of graduate level courses in the OR Department as negotiated with the candidate. Candidates should hold a PhD in operations research or a related field and have a strong interested in solving real-world problems in the areas of military operations research, homeland security, logistics, search and detection, and autonomous systems. Applications are currently being considered. Employment will begin as early as July 2008 and is restricted to U.S. citizens. Compensation will depend upon candidate’s qualifications and experience. NPS is a fully accredited technical university with a highly motivated student body consisting of military officers and government employees from the U.S. and allied countries. The Operations Research Department offers MS and PhD degrees and is one of the largest in the country with its 150 students, 25 tenure-track faculty, and 19 full-time adjunct faculty, including a member of the National Academy of Engineering, three INFORMS Fellows, and three Koopman Prize winners. NPS is located on the Pacific coast in Monterey, California, about 120 miles south of San Francisco.

Research Associate--Test and Evaluation for Navy Ops

Non-Tenure Track Faculty Position: The Operations Research Department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, California invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the Research Associate level. The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Position Description: The successful candidate will be a project coordinator and co-investigator on active funded research projects in the general area of technology and applied analytical research to support Navy decision makers. Specifically, programs supporting decisions related to the Maritime Headquarters and Operations Center and Concept of Operations Generation Program.

Qualifications: Successful candidates for this position must possess a minimum of a masters degree with active duty Navy experience at headquarters level. Candidates should have excellent writing, oral, interpersonal and organizational communications skills and be comfortable briefing senior Navy leadership. A successful candidate will be JPME qualified and familiar with the Joint Planning process for planning tool integration. Candidates should be a U.S. citizenship and currently hold or be able to obtain a Secret classification. Candidates will be expected to travel about 20 days per year to fleet sites with graduate students to conduct evaluation of research planning tools and presentation of those tools to senior Navy leadership.

Salary and Benefits: Naval Postgraduate School non-tenure track research faculty are employed as excepted-status federal civil servants on a salary scale that is competitive with other universities. Faculty are eligible for the health insurance, life insurance and retirement benefits available to all federal government employees. Academic appointments and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

National Research Council Postdoctoral Associateship Positions

The OR Department and the National Research Council invite applicants for Postdoctoral Associateship positions in the areas of military operations research, homeland security, logistics, search and detection, and autonomous systems. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in operations research or a related field and have a strong interest in solving real-world problems. The National Security Institute at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, California invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the Research Associate level. The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The NPS Mission:
The mission of the Naval Postgraduate School is to “increase the combat effectiveness of U.S. and Allied armed forces and enhance the security of the U.S.A. through advanced education and research programs focused on the technical, analytical and managerial tools needed to confront defense related challenges of the future”. Consistent with this mission the National Security Institute (NSI) provides focused on research and education in support of national security and homeland security. As such it is a collaboration between the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL; Livermore CA), the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS; Monterey CA) and the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB; Santa Barbara CA).

Position Description:

Successful candidates for this position must possess a minimum of a masters degree in International Policy, Non-Proliferation and Weapons of Mass Destruction from an accredited university. Candidates should have excellent writing, oral, interpersonal and organizational communications skills. U.S. citizenship and currently hold or obtain a Top Secret, Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance.

Institution and Setting:
The Naval Postgraduate School (http://www.nps.edu), established in 1909, is the Navy’s Corporate University and offers graduate programs at all levels for officers of the United States Armed Services, civilian employees of defense laboratories and officers and civilians from Allied nations. The NPS has approximately 1600 resident students enrolled in graduate degree programs, as well as non-resident students served by a distance learning program. NSI has established programs of research and education that support the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and other US Government Agencies.

Research Associate in Operations Analysis

The Operations Research Department, The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) seeks qualified applicants for the position of Research Associate in Operations Analysis.

The ideal candidate will have qualifications in scientific research, laboratory management, and a masters degree (or equivalent) in operations research or a related field. Organizational and management skills are also important qualifications. Candidates without a masters degree will be considered for a Research Assistant position.

Military Operations Research Analyst

The Operations Research (OR) Department of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has three non-tenure track faculty positions available for Military Operations Research Analysts starting immediately. The rank of the position is open.

The applicant will conduct military OR projects, teach military OR subjects and supervise master's thesis projects, and conduct research.
The ideal applicant will have an established research program in military OR that will contribute to other research being conducted within the OR Department. An excellent teaching record at the graduate level is preferred. A graduate degree in operations research, or a related field, is required; and a Ph.D. is preferred.
