Tenure-Track Computer Science Faculty Positions

It's hard to beat the location and atmosphere of the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. We are in Monterey, California, a scenic, uncongested Pacific coast city one hour's drive south of the Silicon Valley. We are an all graduate M.S. and Ph.D. program with top-notch U.S. and international military students and rich research opportunities in both the defense and civilian sectors. The Computer Science Department is looking for tenure-track faculty at all levels, especially in networking, information security, software engineering, critical infrastructure protection, mobile communication and machine learning/natural-language processing. Faculty teach graduate classes, supervise M.S. and Ph.D. theses, and conduct cutting-edge scientific research. The typical work load is 50% teaching and 50% research. The School has a strong commitment to research excellence, hosting about $100M externally-funded research annually.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field, and must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or in the process of becoming a permanent resident.

Lecturer Positions

The Department is also looking for candidates for the position of Lecture or Senior Lecturer. Candidates must hold a Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The primary duty is teaching of introductory computer science courses and selected advanced topics in areas such as networks, software engineering, databases, artificial intelligence, computer security, and graphics. Other duties may include support of research projects and administrative functions.

Research Associate

The Computer Science Department at the Naval Postgraduate School has an immediate opening for a Research Associate to assist in the development of semantic-search technology. A strong understanding of linguistics and of mathematical models of semantics is a necessity. Ability to program is desirable. A Ph.D. in Linguistics or Mathematical Linguistics or Computational Linguistics is preferred. The position is for the fiscal year 2008 (FY2008), but there is possibility for renewal based on funding. To apply for this position, please send your resume and a cover letter to Prof. Craig Martell, cmartell@nps.edu. Questions about the position should be directed to the same. The Naval Postgraduate School is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Research Associate

The Computer Science Department at the Naval Postgraduate School has an immediate opening for a Research Associate to assist in the study of the suitability of the Power PC Cell Broadband Engine for implementation of various encryption algorithms. We are interested in studying approaches to both increase performance and to provide “trusted, fail-safe” cryptography implemented in software on this platform. Candidates for this position should have at least Master’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience with a strong background in software/ operating systems development that is “close to the hardware.” Experience working on the Cell BE with multiple cores is a strong plus. Linux/Unix experience will also be useful. Candidates should be U.S citizens. Duties will include assisting in the procurement and set up of a test bed, assisting in the design of various algorithms, development of software test frames, software development and support in developing papers and customer presentations describing the work. The position is for 13 months, but may be extended based on contract availability. To apply for this position send your resume and a cover letter to Prof. George W. Dinolt, gwdinolt@nps.edu. Questions about the position can be directed to Prof. Dinolt. The Naval Postgraduate School is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Research Associate

The CS Department has an opening for a research associate to work in the area of autonomous coordination of unmanned vehicles. The hire will be responsible for implementing and maintaining a database of GIS-based sensor data, implementing translators between raw and XML-based data formats, and assist in developing path planning solutions based on this data. Applicant should hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, and be familiar with autonomous vehicles and GIS-based Information Systems. The position is open immediately, and will continue through September 2007, with possible extension. Applicants should contact Kevin Squire at kmsquire@nps.edu, (831)656-2509.

Application Process

Electronically send your curriculum vitae (including a Web link to all supporting documents) and a cover letter indicating which position you are applying for and outlining your research accomplishments and teaching philosophy to the CS Search Committee at CSSRCH@nps.edu. Questions about the application process should be directed to: Associate Professor Craig Martell, cmartell@nps.edu, (831) 656-2110. The Naval Postgraduate School is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
