Executive MBA Program - Overview
The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), offered by the NPS Graduate School of Business & Public Policy (BPP), is designed to provide Navy officers with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in future leadership assignments. The program's Defense-focused courses educate officers to think analytically, to synthesize information from a wide range of sources, and ultimately to make quality strategic decisions under conditions of uncertainty. In short, our goal is to provide the Navy with senior leaders prepared to face the business challenges and make the resource allocation decisions critical to achieving the objectives of the Sea Enterprise initiative to recapitalize the Navy.
The EMBA program is a 24-month, part-time, distance-learning program. Students attend class during normal duty hours one day a week for 6-7 hours in their local duty area. The primary course delivery mode is two-way video and audio video teleconferencing. NPS faculty also use the Internet for course management and, at times, instruction. This mode of instruction "brings classes to the students", allowing officers to stay in their shore duty billet and support the command mission.
Students enter the program as a "Cohort", taking all classes together and completing the program as a group. All students are required to attend a one-week orientation session at NPS the week prior to the first quarter of classes. A reading package, which is the required reading for the week at NPS, will be sent to all students prior to their travel. During that one-week orientation, students also take a two-credit course in "Managing Teams." Following this trip to Monterey, students return to their parent commands and all classes are delivered to the cohort group there. At least once each quarter NPS faculty meet with students face-to-face.
The students must attain a minimum average quality point rating of 3.00 to be eligible for the masters degree. Upon successful completion of the EMBA program, students are awarded an Executive Master of Business Administration degree granted by the Naval Postgraduate School. All costs for this EMBA graduate program (including tuition and travel to NPS) are fully funded by the Navy, with the exception of course books and other student materials that must be paid for by the student.
