Remote and Intranet Access Information

NPS Intranet Access

The Naval Postgraduate School Intranet is restricted to faculty, staff, and students who have an NPS user account.  To view the intranet site, valid users must connect from within the internal NPS network or remotely by using one of the following applications.

If you have any issues with connecting to the Intranet, please contact the Technology Assistance Center.

NPSBart

NPSBart is the best method for mustering and accessing most internal web pages.  NPSBart only requires a web browser and an internet connection to operate, and is only accessible from off campus.

Using NPSBart you will be able to:

  • Access internal websites/applications including, but not limited to, the intranet, Python, Student Muster, and Student Opinion Forms (SOFs).

To use NPSBart:

  1. Visit https://npsbart.nps.edu
  2. Enter your NPS "User Name" and "Password" then click "Login".

Note: Dudley Knox Library resources that are limited to NPS users only CAN NOT be accessed via NPS Bart. To access NPS-only library resources, please either use the CISCO VPN or have your library account information available so that you will be able to log into the library's proxy server when prompted to do so. See the Library's Remote Access Information page for more information.

NPS Voyager Citrix Portal

Voyager allows access to NPS applications from a remote location.

Using Citrix you will be able to:

  • Access applications specific to your NPS user role (i.e. Student, Faculty, Staff)
  • Access internal websites/applications including, but not limited to, the intranet, Python, Student Muster, Matlab and Student Option Forms.

To use the NPS Voyager Citrix Portal:

    1. Visit https://voyager.ern.nps.edu  (on campus) or https://voyager.nps.edu (off campus)*
    2. Login with your NPS "User Name" and "Password"

Further setup instructions are available.

* Voyager supports a basic Java-based Citrix client that will work on most operating systems without any client to install. However, for reliability and performance we recommend you install the Citrix Presentation Server Web Client.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a secure connection to the NPS internal network.

NPS supports connections from the Cisco AnyConnect (SSL) VPN client, and from the Cisco VPN (IPSec) client.

Either client will allow you to:

  • Access internal websites/applications including, but not limited to, the Intranet, Python, Student Muster, and Student Option Forms.
  • Map network drives (including your "H" drive).
  • Remote desktop over to computers located on campus.

Since your remote computer will be connected to the NPS network, it must meet our security requirements. Operating system security patches must be applied, and anti-virus software must be installed and kept up to date.

The Cisco AnyConnect client will allow you to connect your home computer to the NPS network. Select your Operating System to download and install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client::

Microsoft Windows
Apple OSX
Linux

Many handheld devices, including the iPad and iPhone, have native support for the Cisco VPN (IPSec) Client.  The Cisco VPN (IPSec) client configuration settings and client software are available on the Software Download page under Remote Access Tools.  An NPS Login is required to access this page.

Dial - Up

Dial-up connection options are available, but not recommended.

Using Dial-up you will be able to:

  • Access internal websites/applications including, but not limited to, the intranet, Python, Student Muster, Matlab and Student Option Forms.

Further instructions for Dial-up access can be found here.

Department of Defense Root Certificate Install

  • Download and run the DoD Root Certificates Installer (Windows only) to allow your computer to permanently recognize DoD SSL certificates as valid.
NOTE: Installer must be run as an administrator.
  • DoD root certificates for Mac need to be downloaded at https://dod411.chamb.disa.mil (DISA website requires CAC inserted into a working Card Reader and a connection from .MIL network space - contact the Technology Assistance Center for help with this).
  • For non-Windows machines we recommend installing certificates for both NPS and other DoD secure sites.  Download and save these files and follow the instructions for your operating system for installing root certificates:
    DoD Root CA2 Base64.cer and DoD Root CA3 Base64.cer

Setup instructions for downloading your e-mail to your computer can be found here here (internal only).
