I would like a Blackboard account. How can I get one set up?
If you are an NPS student or faculty member, chances are you already have one. Your Blackboard username will be the same as your NPS username (everything before the "@nps.navy.mil" in your email address). Your password has nothing to do with your NPS password. If you do not know your Blackboard password, click on the "Forgot Password" link, under the area where you input your username and password. Fill out the form, using your NPS email address, or the username mentioned earlier. Doing this should cause an email to be sent to you that contains a link to a secure area where you can reset your password.. If this still does not work, email tac@nps.edu and the NPS Blackboard Administrators will reset your password and email it to you.

I forgot my Blackboard password. What is it?
First, try using the "Forgot Password" link below the Blackboard login area. If that doesn't work, email tac@nps.edu.

Why is the link to Blackboard not working?
or
Is Blackboard having server problems? I can't access it.
or
I'm in Blackboard and pages are loading slow, or not at all.
All these questions are usually related to NPS's internet connectivity being down, or slow. First, check to make sure you have the link to Blackboard right. The correct link is https://nps.blackboard.com . NPS's Blackboard system is located on a server outside of NPS's firewall. This means that if NPS's internet connectivity or firewall goes down, everyone on the NPS campus trying to access Blackboard (and people using NPS's dialup) will be unable to do so. However, people outside of NPS's firewall--most DL students--will still have access to Blackboard. If you are having difficulty getting to the Blackboard system and you are on campus, please check to see if NPS's internet connectivity is down before emailing. You can do this by going to any other website outside of NPS. Additionally, announcements about internet connectivity are sometimes posted on the NPS Intranet, located at http://intranet.nps.edu, available from on base only.

How do I change my password or email address?
You can change your personal information (including password and email address) by clicking on "Personal Information" under the "Tools" section of the first page you see after logging into Blackboard.

What are the minimum hardware and software requirements to use Blackboard?
or
What browser settings are required to use Blackboard?
JavaScript and Cookies must be enabled. If you wish to use the Chat feature, Java must be enabled.

In addition, we recommend that you have the Flash player browser plugin ( Download ), Quicktime ( Download ), Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel as many instructors post files in those formats. Keep in mind, also, that individual instructors may require additional software to take their course.

I use AOL to access the internet. Why is Blackboard not working?
What NPS recommends for AOL users is that they use a browser that is external to the AOL environment. Blackboard Support says the following about AOL:
"America Online (AOL), Prodigy, and CompuServe are Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who attempt to capture their audience through a dynamic web interface often at he expense of functionality. As part of their software they each provide an internal web browser that allows users to browse the web. Often, these web browsers are either customized and/or are older versions of IE (Internet Explorer). We do not recommend using these browsers with Blackboard software. CAUTION: Using these particular internal browsers may cause sporadic problems with your online course. To minimize the possibility of browser related problems, we strongly recommend using an external browser when accessing your online courses.

I would like an old class I took several quarters ago to be removed from my list of courses.
Removing you from the course roster is the responsibility of the instructor of that course. In order to get old courses off your list, please contact the instructors of the courses you would like to be removed.

Why is my email address not showing up on the class roster?
This is due to the way your privacy options are set. To fix this, click on the "Home" tab, then "Personal Information," under the Tools section. Click on "Set Privacy Options". On this page you can choose how much (or how little) of your personal information is displayed to other users in Blackboard. Most people check only "Email Address" under Section 1: Personal Information. When you are done setting your privacy options, click "Submit" and they will be entered into the system.

I was taking a quiz in Blackboard, and when I submitted it, it gave me an error message, saying I had already submitted it. What went wrong?
This problem is due to a bug in Blackboard, and occurs when you get disconnected from the internet while you are taking a quiz. If this happened to you (which can occur quite frequently if you are on base, as NPS's internet connectivity goes down often), Blackboard thinks that you have abandoned the quiz and saves your "grade" for that quiz as an Incomplete. While you are still taking the quiz, the internet connection resumes without you ever realizing that it was temporarily gone. Then, when you try to submit the quiz, it thinks you have already taken it and won't let you submit your answers. If this happens, please save the questions that you answered, and your answers (in a Word document), and notify us of the problem. We will contact the instructor and explain the problem to him or her, and request that he or she accept the answers that you saved in a Word document. This bug will be fixed in the next version of Blackboard.

My instructor links to content on a CD. When I click on it, nothing happens. What's wrong?
First of all, you'll need to make sure that your CD drive setting is configured properly in Blackboard. This allows Blackboard to know what drive (D:\, E:\, F:\, etc.) to run the CD from. You can change this setting by clicking on the "Home" tab, then the "Personal Information" link (you'll see this link listed under "Tools"). Once you're there, click on "Set CD-ROM drive". When this page loads, it'll allow you to choose what drive to run your CD from.

If you have already done this, then the problem could be with your browser's security settings. To fix this in Internet Explorer, do the following:

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab

Click Trusted Sites

Click the "Sites" button

Uncheck the box that says "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone

Where it says "Add this Web site to the zone", type in "http://nps.blackboard.com" (without quotes)

Click the "Add" button

Click the "OK" button

Click "OK" again, and you should be set.

When I click on the "NPS Library" tab in Blackboard, and then go to the ProQuest database, I get a login screen rather than going straight into the ProQuest database.
or
When I open a ProQuest database article from inside a course site in Blackboard, I get a login screen instead of the article.
This is a known conflict between Blackboard and ProQuest, and it appears to only happen on some computers. We have found that it can be circumvented by opening the ProQuest screen in a new window. You can do this by right-clicking on the link to the ProQuest database or article, and choosing "Open Link In New Window" or "Open In New Window" (depending on your browser). If this still does not work, please contact the Blackboard Helpdesk at tac@nps.edu.

I am currently enrolled in a course but it is not appearing in the “My Courses” section of Blackboard, what do I do?
Before your can see your course in Blackboard you must be enrolled in the course in Python, the instructor must request a Blackboard component to that course and then he/she must make it available to students.  If you are not seeing your course in Blackboard, please contact your instructor to ensure there is a Blackboard component for the class and it is available to students.
