The eighteen-month Systems Engineering and Analysis (SEA) program at the Naval Postgraduate School offers students the opportunity to study both contextual matter (sensors, weapons, information systems, networks, C4I), and techniques (combat modeling and simulation, project management, fundamentals of systems engineering). Graduates will earn
a Masters Degree in Systems Engineering.
The curriculum includes four academic tracks of typically four courses each,
and a capstone project.
a. Warfare Technologies: the scientific principles underlying current sensor,
command and control, and weapon performance, as well as expectations and
limitations of promising new technologies.
b. Systems Integration: the art of designing complex systems, from
the perspective of both fleet operator and new system designer, including test
and evaluation and costing.
c. Operations and Tactical Analysis: the study of disciplined,
quantitative, objective, reasoning, and the ability to communicate the effects
of critical decision variables, with extra emphasis on quick-reaction analysis
to respond to sudden operational situation in war.
d. Joint and Navy Professional Military Education Phase I: the elements of
power, strategy, policy, and operational art, taught by resident Naval War
College faculty.
Capstone Projects are team studies which satisfy the requirement of a thesis.
They involve the integration of a new and complex system. Depending on the
Naval sponsor, the problem may be directed at more effective operations or the
design of a new warfare system, or a combination of the two.
While the primary audience is Unrestricted Line officers, and the projects tend to be designed around broad naval issues, Officers from all communities are welcome. Skills developed in this degree program will deepen a student’s understanding of how the military builds and fights
combat systems
