Matthew DuPee

Research Associate

Matthew DuPeeMatt DuPee has independently studied political and security events happening in Afghanistan since 1999. Mr. DuPee worked as the managing editor for Afgha.com between 2004 and 2008. In 2009, he participated in a two-month research trip to Afghanistan.

Mr. DuPee’s articles have been published in a variety of publications including World Politics Review, Himal SouthAsian Magazine, the Frontier Post, Soldier of Fortune, Asia Times Online, the Middle East Times, e-Ariana, The Center for Conflict and Peace Studies, and others. On September 1, 2009, Mr. DuPee presented, “Opium and Heroin Production in Afghanistan: Renewed Strategies” at the Afghan Theater Security Strategies conference hosted by the Naval Postgraduate School at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, CA. On august 26, Mr. DuPee presented “Poppy Cultivation and Interdiction Efforts in Southern Afghanistan” for the Conference on Culture and Counterinsurgency in Southern Afghanistan. The Kandahar Task-Force Commander, Canadian Brig. Gen. Daniel Menard, and a dozen of his top officers attended the event.

Now serving as a Research Associate with the Program for Culture and Conflict Studies, Mr. DuPee continues his research on Afghanistan’s narcotics, politics, security, geography and human terrain issues. He serves as an assistant editor to the CCS webpage and webjournal. He has also contributed to the Regional Security Education Program briefing deploying troops on Afghanistan.

Mr. DuPee earned a BFA degree in film and video production from Point Park University and received intelligence analyst training from Neumann College. He is currently enrolled in the M.A. Program, Regional Security Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School. His thesis focuses on the interaction between criminal organizations, narcotics, and insurgent movements and how this nexus can affect political outcomes. Matthew DuPee
