Research Associate
Matthew Dearing served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. As a Marine Security Guard, he served at US embassies in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo and Minsk, Belarus. In 2006, Mr. Dearing earned his B.A. in International Political Economy at the University of California Berkeley. He is currently enrolled in the M.A. Program, Regional Security Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School.
As Research Associate with the Program for Culture and Conflict Studies, Matthew Dearing conducts a variety of research on politics, security and human terrain in Afghanistan. He also serves as the web and journal editor and provides operational support to the program.
Matthew Dearing is involved with development work in Malawi, serving as Vice President of the nonprofit Sports Alliance of Malawi. His research interests include Africa, Afghanistan, political theory, terrorism, ethnic conflict, insurgency and unconventional warfare. Culture & Conflict Review Articles:
