NPS Foundation Promotes Counter-IED Research

The event, which gave Foundation members an opportunity to learn more about the school’s research efforts, featured briefings, joint discussions and live robotics demonstrations from various academic programs across campus. NPS Prof Dons CFO Hat

Less than a year after becoming the Navy’s Assistant Secretary for Financial Management and Comptroller, GSBPP Professor on leave Douglas Brook has taken on a dual hat as DoD’s chief financial officer, Acting Undersecretary of Defense (Comptroller). “This is a great opportunity to view the Department of Defense enterprise from an OSD perspective," Brook said in an interview from his new post. "The new higher level experience will definitely enrich my teaching and research agenda when I return to NPS.” (Released)

These officers spent a week guiding Egyptian nationals during contracting and negotiations strategy exercises. (Released)

CCMR Hosts International Defense Transformation Seminar

Participants from the International Defense Transformation Seminar, hosted by the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Civil-Military Relations, gather at the International Flag Garden outside of Herrmann Hall. During the two-week-long course, military and civilian participants from 10 different countries engaged in practical exercises, lectures and case studies to increase their effectiveness in developing and transforming national security capabilities. NPS Prof Publishes Groundbreaking Book on Bioweapons

With the Director of Homeland Security saying last month that he considers biological threats the most pressing and challenging security issue, Naval Postgraduate School Assistant Professor of National Security Affairs Anne L. Clunan chose a propitious time to publish a pioneering book on attributing blame for the use of biological warfare agents. Terrorism, War, or Disease? Unraveling the Use of Biological Weapons, co-edited with former director of the NPS Center for Contemporary Conflict and National Security Affairs senior lecturer Peter Lavoy, is the first anthology by recognized leaders in the field to rigorously examine the complex scientific, political, military, legal and policy challenges in determining when bioweapons have been used and who has used them. Clunan formerly served as special assistant to the deputy director, Department of State Office of Soviet Union Affairs. Lavoy is currently National Intelligence Officer for South Asia at the National Intelligence Council and previously served as Director for Counterproliferation Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The book was published this year by Stanford University Press as part of its prestigious Security Studies series. (Released)

NPS Professor Offers Prolific Insight to Nuclear Deterrence

Retired Pakistan Army Brig. Gen. Feroz Khan, now a professor of National Security Affairs (NSA) at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), contributed to The Long Shadow: Nuclear Weapons and Security in 21st Century Asia with a chapter discussing nuclear deterrence and Pakistan's position within the nuclear proliferation theater of central Asia. Former NPS faculty member Dr. Peter R. Lavoy co-wrote the chapter; and Dr. James Wirtz, Dean of NPS’ School of International Graduate Studies, and Dr. S. Paul Kapur, an Associate Professor of NSA, contributed their own chapters to the text. (Released)

NPS Welcomes Nobel Laureate

Dr. Herbert Kroemer, a professor from the University of California Santa Barbara who received the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics, delivered a guest lecture for the Naval Postgraduate School Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Oct. 23. Kroemer’s scientific accomplishments include the development of laser technology that has helped create compact discs, digital versatile discs and fiber communications. (Released)
