Cell phones rang and beepers beeped as top Department of Homeland Security and other crisis/disaster management officials, first responders and industry and academic leaders gathered at the Naval Postgraduate School Aug. 26-29 for the second annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) conference on “Homeland Security in Action” occurring just as hurricane Gustav bore down on the Louisiana coast. The goal of the working symposium was to catalyze communications, collaboration and interoperability among the agencies, organizations and individuals who develop and operate air, space and maritime systems in support of the homeland defense and security mission. A highlight of the conference was the presentation of a special commendation award to the Department of Homeland Security by AIAA Homeland Security Program Committee chair Dr. Kevin Kremeyer, left. Corporate leadership, senior program managers and engineers from Boeing’s famed Phantom Works and Integrated and Advanced Defense Systems divisions, including more than a dozen NPS alumni now in top positions with the defense contractor, hosted the Boeing Technology Exposition and Exchange at the Naval Postgraduate School, Aug. 7. The purpose of the expo, on the theme “Transitioning Technology into Capabilities for the Warfighter,” was to share the company’s advanced technology, operations and best practices with NPS students and faculty, identify new areas of collaboration aligned with the NPS-Boeing Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, and build relationships with DoD’s future acquisition leaders. At the Expo, five NPS alumni now with the company joined forces to hoist a Boeing “Scan Eagle” tactical warfighting support UAV, left to right: Paul Bloch (Operations Research, 1973), now with Boeing’s modeling and simulations requirements; Dave Manser (Space Systems Engineering, 1993), now program manager for Boeing’s Lab Net; Matthew Finlon (Operations Research, 1991), now manager for Boeing’s platform effectiveness and survivability; John Hearing (Space Systems Operations, 1991), now manager of tactical unmanned aircraft systems; and Chuck Marashian (Administrative Science, 1982), now with Boeing’s advanced Navy command and control systems. Bloch was Hearing’s thesis adviser while both were at NPS. (Released)
