Military, government, industry and academic leaders converged on the Naval Postgraduate School Sept. 9-11 for the first annual Cooperative Operations and Applied Science and Technology Studies (COASTS) Science and Technology Symposium, focused on bringing the latest software and technology solutions to first responders, law enforcement and the services. A highlight of the conference was the keynote by retired Air Force Gen. Charles Holland, former commander, Headquarters, U.S. Special Operations Command (photo), on the importance of shared situational awareness and interoperability for multinational operations in the Global War on Terrorism and of programs like COASTS for quickly improving these mission critical capabilities. “The future is about joint, combined, interagency, coalition and commercial all working together. [COASTS Program Director] Jim Ehlert is bringing the coalition partners together, and this is exactly what we need,” Holland said. (Released)

As the Summer 2008 graduating class watched with rapt attention, Naval Postgraduate School President Daniel Oliver, left, pinned the Bronze Star on Operations Research military instructor Cmdr. Douglas Burton, right, for meritorious achievement in connection with combat operations while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Bronze Star award was the surprise opening of the Sept. 16 Summer 2008 awards ceremony at which 33 students and four faculty members were recognized for outstanding academic and instructional achievement. “This was completely unexpected and such a great honor that I’m almost speechless,” Burton said after the ceremony. “Everything I did was for the young soldiers, Sailors, Marines, who are the reason good things happen in Iraq. They were my driving force and I can’t say enough about them. I like to think that perhaps what I did saved a few lives, and that’s the most important thing.” (Released)
