Professor Peter Denning, chairman of the Naval Postgraduate School Department of Computer Science and director of the Cebrowski Institute (center), receives a surprise award for “exceptional vision, devotion and commitment to excellence” from the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), June 9. Presenting the award were ACM President Stuart Feldman (left) and the society’s CEO John White. Past president of the ACM Council, editor in chief of the association’s magazine, and founder of the ACM Digital Library, the first comprehensive digital library of any scientific society, Denning said he felt like Peter Sellers, “having played all the roles.” (Released)

The Naval Postgraduate School Visitor Quarters (VQ) team has been awarded the highest rating for facilities and service -- the Five-Star Zumwalt Award for Excellence -- by the Commander Navy Installations Command 2007 Visitor Quarters Review. Named after former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt, the prestigious hospitality award recognizes commands whose bachelor housing and visitor quarters operations excel in customer service and management. The NPS team won the four-star Zumwalt (pictured right) in 1991. This year’s five-Star award will be presented in November. ARCTIC OCEAN (March 18, 2007) - Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Alexandria (SSN 757) is submerged after surfacing through two feet of ice during ICEX-07, a U.S. Navy and Royal Navy exercise conducted on and under a drifting ice floe about 180 nautical miles off the north coast of Alaska. (Released)

Prof. Peter Denning (right), chairman of the Naval Postgraduate School Computer Science Department and director of the Cebrowski Institute, receives one of two inaugural National Science Foundation Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Distinguished Education Fellow awards from CISE Assistant Director Jeanette Wing at NSF headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, July 13. Denning was given a two-year, $250,000 grant by the independent federal agency to transform computer science education nationwide. (Released)

NPS President, retired Vice Adm. Dan Oliver (right), visited the Office of Continuous Learning (OCL) on Friday June 8th. Acting Director, OCL Valerie Moule’ (left) briefed him on the capabilities and initiatives of her staff to include faculty development, Distributed Learning (DL) course design and development, and DL innovation projects. Interim Director, NCR Tom Hazard addressed the National Capital Region’s mission and goals to expand our NCR presence and to assist in delivering NPS’ unique, relevant Education and Research intellectual capital to DoD, Federal and allied partners, in geographically dispersed locations.
