Welcome & General Information

Before Arrival

Welcome Aboard!  Most Navy Commands send “Welcome Aboard” messages.  NPS sends “Welcome Aboard” packages via e-mail due to the volume and diversity of incoming students.  The package will include your user ID, password, and sponsor assignment.  To request your welcome aboard package, please provide a valid e-mail address where you wish to receive this information to sso@nps.edu.  You will receive the package approximately 2-3 months before the start of your first quarter.

Pre-Registration:  In an effort to provide you, our customers, with the best possible service and support Student Services have developed a web in-processing system. This system will greatly reduce your in-processing time once you arrive at the Naval Postgraduate School and must be completed prior to your arrival.  The most essential element of your pre-arrival in-processing is access to the NPS Education Management System called PYTHON and the completion of your student profile within PYTHON.

Curriculum Information:  Find out more about your curriculum or department on the NPS web site. The NPS web site has information about courses of study for Distributed Learning students as well.

Take the NPS Virtual Campus Tour.

Military uniforms are authorized at all times. Appropriate civilian business attire is authorized on all days other than Tuesday. Specifics on appropriate business attire are delineated in the Student Information Handbook (PDF 485K).

Student Information Handbook

An on-line student handbook is maintained by the Dean of Students to officially disseminate NPS policy concerning student matters. ALL students are required to read, understand and comply with the policies set forth in the Student Information Handbook (PDF 485K).

Housing

The Parks at Monterey Bay, the peninsula's privatized military housing office, offers homes in four residential areas on the peninsula all of the areas are within a 20 minute drive to campus. Visit www.theparksatmontereybay.com to download an application and a welcome book, or contact the Housing Office directly at 800.334.9168.

Single and unaccompanied military personnel are authorized to reside in military housing as well as those service members with families. Housing is available for all ranks and is assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no waiting list and no appointments needed.  The Parks at Monterey Bay will not assign housing until you are ready to move in.  New homes are assigned to incoming military families based on availability.

The cost of off post/temporary housing is high because Monterey is a resort/high cost area. A Navy Lodge is available near campus to accommodate military families - at an affordable rate. The telephone number is toll-free 800.628.9466 (800-NAVY-INN).
