It is not intended to be a comprehensive list and it does not include basic books that can be found by searching BOSUN the Library's on-line catalog. All classified materials are housed in the Library's Restricted Resources & Services (RRS) area and are not referenced here. Please note that this area includes documents that are unclassified but contain a "limited distribution" statement as well as those materials classified up to the Secret level. This is very similar to the Open Source Center by providing coverage of international issues and events. Information is from 1500 international sources including translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals and government documents.

Ingenta  
Fall 1998-
The Ingenta Library Gateway is a searchable database of more than 11 million citations from over 20,000 journals. Searching is by author or keyword or you can browse the table of contents of specific journals. NPS faculty, staff and students can setup a profile to receive the table of content information of any journal Ingenta indexes or to be alerted to new articles on topics of interest. Information and access is available from the library's databases page.

International Political Science Abstracts.
v. 1- 1951-
This provides indexing and abstracts for many current political science journals. The index is arranged by country as well as subject.

JSTOR   
JSTOR is a digital archive collection of core scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. It contains the entire runs of each journal from the first volume up to those published 2 to 5 years ago. By agreement with the publishers JSTOR maintains a moving 2 to 5 year lag in most recent holdings available.

Open Source Center   
Formerly FBIS (Foreign Broadcast Information Service)
Paper/microfiche varies - 1987-
Internet 1996-
Open Source Center reports are translations of foreign radio and TV broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, books and periodicals. They contain "political, military, economic, environmental, and sociological news, commentary and other information." From 1996 forward this information is available via the Internet but because it is classified as "For Official Use Only" only those with DoD IDs will be logged in. For information prior to 1996, indexes for individual regions are available with the actual reports on microfiche. Military personnel can contact the Open Source Center and request their own password.

PAIS International 
This provides indexing for the latest books, periodical articles and government publications in various areas including business, economics, social conditions and international relations.

Political Science: A SAGE Full-Text Collection  
Political Science: A SAGE Full-Text Collection includes the full-text of 23 journals published by SAGE and participating societies, some journals going back twenty years, encompassing over 18,000 articles. Staff College Automated Military Periodicals Index [SCAMPI]

Developed to support the curriculum of the Joint Forces Staff College, this is similar to the Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals and provides selected citations to journal articles and selected documents and reports. Subject, author and keyword indexing is provided.

United States Political Science Documents [USPSD]
1975-1991
A nice index to articles written in the political science arena. Vol. I provides indexing while Vol. 2 provides abstracts of the articles. World problems and foreign affairs are well covered.

This is the electronic version of the ABC POL SCI indexes referenced above and provides indexing and abstracting for periodical literature in the areas of: political science, international relations, law and public administration/policy.

Reference Sources

Country Background Notes
Published by the U.S. Department of State and updated as necessary, these provide 3-4 page "thumbnail" sketches of each country. Headings indicating areas of coverage include: geography, people, government, economy, history, political condition, foreign relations and more.

The Europa World Year Book
1959-
Arranged alphabetically by country, the information provided includes: location, climate, language, recent history, government, defense and economic affairs, as well as considerable statistical information. It also has directory information regarding the government, political organizations, judicial system, religion and more.

The International Year Book and Statesmen's Who's Who

This gives fairly in-depth coverage of every country and includes statistics. Brief descriptions of international organizations such as the United Nations and its affiliates and other intergovernmental organizations are also provided.

Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications 
1976-
This is the most comprehensive index for referencing many of the documents published by the U.S. Government. Updated regularly, this includes reference to documents published by the DoD, State Department, Congress and most other federal agencies. When available, hyperlinks to electronic documents are included in the records.

The Military Balance   
This provides a quantitative assessment of the world's military forces and their defense expenditure. Also has brief information and statistics regarding UN Peacekeeping operations.

NationMaster
Useful site for comparing statistics between nations. The information is broken down by region or country, category, and subcategory. The results can be searched across individual or multiple countries and/or regions. The categories include: agriculture, crime, democracy, economy, education, environment, immigration, labor, military, religion, transportation and more. All statistics are cited so you can make sure they are authentic. Maps and flags of each country are also available.

Political Handbook of the World
1928-
Arranged alphabetically by country, this provides brief information about each country. It includes political background, foreign relations, political parties and current issues.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute

Categories of coverage include: global and regional security and conflicts, weapons and technology proliferation, military expenditures, arms productions and trade, and arms control and disarmament. This includes some major documents and speeches which are well indexed. Some information is available from the SIPRI web site.

Each entry also includes a brief bibliography of other sources.

Organized into 3 main categories (National Affairs, International Affairs, and General), this is a useful source for finding quotes and statements made by well-known and renowned public figures. Sources include: print and broadcast media, speeches, lectures, interviews, news conferences, committee hearing, in congress and in the parliaments and palaces around the world. It is well indexed.

Internet latest Published annually by the CIA, this gives brief statistical sketches of each country. Contents headings include: Map, Flag, Geography, People, Government, Economy, Transportation, Communications and Defense.]


Maps

The Library has a growing collection of maps of various sizes, scales and content. A variety of maps published by the CIA make good briefing maps. We also have nautical, topographic and aeronautical charts as well as an increasing number of CD-ROM products. Most of these maps are NOT in BOSUN so please see a reference librarian. References to atlases can, however, be found by searching BOSUN. The Library has a Maps Subject Guide. Of particular interest are the Military Maps and the Regions of Conflict sections.

Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) Databases   
This site is hosted by the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Coverage includes: Nuclear Database, Missile Database, New Independent States (NIS) Database, East Asia Database and their Publications Database.

DTIC Online 
DTIC is the clearinghouse for many DoD reports and is an excellent resource. Through their PUBLIC Online database, the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) indexes and abstracts defense-related government-sponsored scientific, technical and non-technical reports. Although most of the older references only provide an abstract, the majority of the current documents are available as full-text Image files. You may register at the following site:

Facts on International Relations and Security Trends (FIRST) is a free-of-charge service for politicians, journalists, researchers and the interested public. FIRST is a joint project of the International Relations and Security Network (ISN) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

It also has a special topics section, "power" tables which show changes in governments within the past 12 months and what caused the change, arms transfer information and the Defense and Foreign Affairs Daily.

Homeland Security Digital Library

The HSDL is a comprehensive collection of current and archived Homeland Security resources--all in digital format--from federal, state and local agencies, leading national and international organizations, think tanks, universities and more. These resources are selected by the HSDL team of information professionals. The HSDL collection includes U.S. policy documents, key federal publications, state and municipal documents, links to important sites, professional journal articles, multimedia materials, theses, gray literature, Homeland Security related news, a list of upcoming Homeland Security related conferences and events, and links to key agencies & organizations.

Jane's Online   
This provides full-text access to many of the Jane's resources (e.g. All the World's Aircraft and Fighting Ships as well as various periodicals - Jane's Intelligence Review, Jane's Defence Weekly etc.). The library also has many of the Jane's publications in hard copy.

Jane's Sentinel Security Assessments   
Contains expert analysis of the latest events and trends in political, security and military affairs and a detailed breakdown of global military and political structures on a regional basis. Each region is broken down by country with each country profile providing a detailed analysis of political, diplomatic and military capabilities.

Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre   
Jane's Terrorism Intelligence Centre is a gateway to the latest global terrorism related content including news, exclusive features, comprehensive reference material and an interactive events database.

Joint Electronic Library [JEL]  
This provides access to all current Joint Publications. The Library maintains at least one (1) copy of every joint pub including those that have been superceded. The JEL also provides access to the DoD Dictionary, "Compendium of Joint Publications" which contains abstracts of each joint publication, joint related Service publications, JCS historical publications, CJCS Directives, various joint-related research papers and other joint-related publications. The periodicals A Common Perspective and Joint Force Quarterly (JFQ) are also available.

Nexis.com   
This online database service provides full-text information for major newspapers (domestic and international), journals and periodicals, reports, transcripts and more. A password is required, please see a librarian.

National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS)  
The NCJRS Abstracts Database is one of the largest criminal and juvenile justice libraries and databases in the world. The collection, with holdings from the early 1970s to the present, contains more than 180,000 publications, reports, articles, and audiovisual products from the United States and around the world. These resources include statistics, research findings, program descriptions, congressional hearing transcripts, and training materials. The NCJRS sponsoring agencies publish hundreds of reports and other information products each year. Most of the titles are available online through the NCJRS Web site.

This site from the Library of Congress provides a gateway to rich primary source materials related to the history of the US including the Civil War.

American State Papers
This is an important collection of "the legislative and executive documents of Congress during the period 1789 to 1838."  Areas of particular interest include: foreign relations, commerce and navigation, military affairs and naval affairs.

Congressional Hearings
Conducted at the subcommittee or full committee level, hearings provide access to the testimony and data on topics of interest with comments from members of Congress as well as expert witnesses 

Congressional Record
This provides the record and transcripts of the sessions of the House and Senate. Sometimes includes copies of bill or reports and roll call votes.

Declassified Documents Reference System [DDRS]  
This is an excellent source. With coverage back to 1945, it provides access to more than 70,000 declassified documents from various government agencies (e.g. CIA, DoD, FBI, NSC, Dept of State etc.).
