The following bibliography is intended to make you be aware of and help you become familiar with some of the Library's more
useful resources and to give you some ideas of places to start your research. It is not intended to be a comprehensive list
and it does not include basic books that can be found by searching BOSUN the Library's on-line catalog. All classified materials are housed in the Library's Restricted Resources & Services (RRS) area and are not referenced here.
Please note that this area includes documents that are unclassified but contain a “limited distribution” statement as well
as those materials classified up to the Secret level. Please be sure to consult with a reference librarian if you have any questions.

Periodical Indexes
Academic Universe  In the Arts and Sports section of Academic Universe you will be able to search for book reviews. In Lexis-Nexis, you can search
in the Entertainment Library; Book Review file among other places Lexis/Nexis 
Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals [AULIMP]. This provides indexing to significant articles, news items, editorials and books reviews appearing in military and aeronautical
periodicals, many of which are not indexed elsewhere. or via MERLN
Armed Services and Government News  This provides access to the Air Force Times, Army Times, Marine Corps Times, and Navy Times.
CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online)  This provides full-text access to; working papers, conference proceedings, journal articles, books, policy briefs, links,
maps, country data and more from many of the scholarly institutions and think tanks that do research in political science
areas.
EconLit [CSA]  Subject indexing and abstracts of over 400 journals, over 500 collective volumes per year, plus books, dissertations, and
working papers. Contains a great deal of information about Latin America.
Global NewsBank.  This is very similar to the Open Source Center by providing coverage of international issues and events. Information is from
1500 international sources including translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals and government
documents.
Ingenta [Formerly UnCover]  Ingenta provides citations and table of contents information to more than 17,000 journals. Searching is by author or keyword
or you can browse the table of contents of specific journals. NPS faculty, staff and students can setup a profile to receive
the table of content information of any journal. Ingenta indexes or to be alerted to new articles on topics of interest. Information
and access is available from the library's databases page.
International Political Science Abstracts. v. 1- 1951- This provides indexing and abstracts for many current political science journals. The index is arranged by country as well
as subject. Abstr. JA 36A2
Jane's Online  This provides full-text access to many of the Jane's publications (e.g. All the World's Aircraft, Jane's Fighting Ships etc.)
including their periodicals.
JSTOR  JSTOR is a digital archive collection of core scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. It contains
the entire runs of each journal from the first volume up to those published 2 to 5 years ago. By agreement with the publishers
JSTOR maintains a moving 2 to 5 year lag in most recent holdings available.
Lexis-Nexis  This online database service provides full-text information for major newspapers (domestic and international), journals and
periodicals, reports, transcripts and more. A password is required, please see a librarian.
Open Source Center  Formerly known as FBIS, Open Source Center reports are translations of foreign radio and TV broadcasts, news agency transmissions,
newspapers, books and periodicals. They contain "political, military, economic, environmental, and sociological news, commentary
and other information." From 1996 forward this information is available via the Internet but because it is classified as "For
Official Use Only" only those with DoD IDs will be logged in. For information prior to 1996, indexes for individual regions
are available with the actual reports on microfiche. Military personnel can contact the Open Source Center and request their
own password.
PAIS International [CSA]  This provides indexing for the latest books, periodical articles and government publications in various areas including business,
economics, social conditions and international relations.
Project Muse  Full-text access to over 100 university press journals in the humanities, social sciences and mathematics. Coverage for most
journals begins in 1995.
ProQuest Research Library  ProQuest Covers of a broad range of subjects including arts, business, children, education, general interest, health, humanities, international,
law, military, multicultural, psychology, sciences, social sciences, and women's interests.
Social Sciences Citation Index  1965- The Social Sciences Citation Index® provides access to current and retrospective bibliographic information, author abstracts,
and cited references found in over 1,700 of the world's leading scholarly social sciences journals covering more than 50 disciplines.
They also cover individually selected, relevant items from approximately 3,300 of the world’s leading science and technology
journals. Dudley Knox Library’s subscription covers articles and papers published from 1965-present.
SocIndex with Full Text  EBSCO Click on SocINDEX with Full Text This comprehensive sociology research database contains the citations, abstracts, and often
the full text of journals, books, conference papers and other materials, encompassing areas such as criminology & criminal
justice, demography, economic development, ethnic and racial studies, social psychology, and other sub-disciplines.
Staff College Automated Military Periodicals Index [SCAMPI]. Developed to support the curriculum of the Armed Forces Staff College, this is similar to the Air University Library Index
to Military Periodicals and provides selected citations to journal articles and selected documents and reports. Subject, author
and keyword indexing is provided
Worldwide Political Science Abstracts [CSA]  This database is the result of merging Political Science Abstracts and ABC POL Sci and it provides citations and abstract
of the international serials literature in political science, international relations, law, public administration and policy,
military policy and more.
Reference Sources
Background Notes. Published by the U.S. Department of State and updated as necessary, these provide 3-4 page "thumbnail" sketches of each country.
Headings indicating areas of coverage include: geography, people, government, economy, history, political condition, foreign
relations and more.
Lexis Nexis Congressional  This is an electronic version of the CIS Index to Congressional Publications and Public Laws [JK 1001 .A2 Ref]. It provides
indexing to all congressional hearings, reports and documents since 1970. Electronic congressional information can be found
at a number sites, see the Congressional Information section of this handout.
The Europa World Year Book. 1959- Arranged alphabetically by country, the information provided includes: location, climate, language, recent history, government,
defense and economic affairs, as well as considerable statistical information. It also has directory information regarding
the government, political organizations, judicial system, religion and more. Ref AY 14 E9
The International Year Book and Statesmen's Who's Who. 1953- This gives fairly in-depth coverage of every country and includes statistics. Brief descriptions of international organizations
such as the United Nations and its affiliates and other intergovernmental organizations are also provided. Ref JA 51 I6
Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications.  This is the most comprehensive index for referencing many of the documents published by the U.S. Government. Updated regularly,
this includes reference to documents published by the DoD, State Department, Congress and most other federal agencies. When
available, hyperlinks to electronic documents are included in the records.
The Military Balance.  This provides a quantitative assessment of the world's military forces and their defense expenditure. Also has brief information
and statistics regarding UN Peacekeeping operations.
Political Handbook of the World. 1928- Arranged alphabetically by country, this provides brief information about each country. It includes political background,
foreign relations, political parties and current issues Ref JF 37 P71
SIPRI Yearbook. [Stockholm International Peace Research Institute] 1969- Categories of coverage include: global and regional security and conflicts, weapons and technology proliferation, military
expenditures, arms productions and trade, and arms control and disarmament. This includes some major documents and speeches
as is well indexed. Some information is available from the SIPRI web site. Reserve UA 10 S8 South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. 1986- Provides statistical information for each country including major businesses, trade, media etc. as well as listing the major
political players. Ref F 1414.2 S68
The Statesman's Year-Book. 1919- Each country is covered with brief information given through each of the following categories: History, Area & Population,
Climate, Constitution and Government, Defense, Economy, Energy & Natural Resources, Industry, Foreign Economic Relations,
Communications, Justice, Religion, Education & Welfare and Diplomatic Representatives. Each entry also includes a brief bibliography
of other sources. Ref JA 51 S7
Statistical Abstract of Latin America. 1965- Provides various statistics related to many aspects of Latin American Countries. Ref HA 751 S7
Lexis Nexis Statistical  This database searches and provides summaries of statistical publications produced by state, federal and international agencies
as well as non-government entities. When available, links to the full-text of selected publications are provided.
The World Factbook [formerly National Basic Intelligence Factbook] Published annually by the CIA, this gives brief statistical sketches of each country. Contents headings include: Map, Flag,
Geography, People, Government, Economy, Transportation, Communications and Defense.]
What They Said in [YEAR]: The Yearbook of World Opinion. 1970- Organized into 3 main categories (National Affairs, International Affairs, and General), this is a useful source for finding
quotes and statements made by well-known and renowned public figures. Sources include: print and broadcast media, speeches,
lectures, interviews, news conferences, committee hearing, in congress and in the parliaments and palaces around the world.
It is well indexed. Ref D 410 W5
Yearbook of the United Nations. 1957- This covers broad topics such as political and security questions, regional questions, economic and social questions, trusteeship
and decolonization, legal questions, and international organizations related to the UN. Major UN resolutions and decisions
are reprinted. Ref JX 1977.A37 Y3
Dictionaries and Encyclopedias
Historical Dictionaries of…. [series] Each volume covers a difference country and the entries are in the form of brief paragraphs containing introductory information
on historical, political and socio-economic topics. Each volume also contains an introductory chapter with a historical overview
of the country and includes a chronology on major events. Ref F 1406 L34
International Military and Defense Encyclopedia. 6 vols. 1993. This provides fairly comprehensive coverage and contains 786 articles on international military and defense related topics.
Each article includes a brief bibliography. Ref U 24 I58
Other
Country Studies [former known as Army Area Handbooks] A continuing series of books prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area
Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. Most books in the series deal with a particular foreign country,
describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions, and examining the
interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. The volumes each contain illustrations,
charts, maps and a bibliography.
Economic Survey of Latin America. 1982- This provides written overviews and statistical data for a variety of topics related to the countries of Latin American and
the Caribbean. General HC 161 A32
