This resource is intended to help you become familiar with some of the Library's many useful resources as well as some of the more important websites devoted to topics of interest to the homeland security/defense researcher. This page should be used in conjunction with the Homeland Security Digital Library and the National Security Affairs resource page to get the broader view of resources available. It is not intended to be a comprehensive list and it does not include basic books that can be found by searching BOSUN the Library's on-line catalog.

BioMed Central 
This site provides free access to peer-reviewed biomedical research through over 100 journals. BioMed Central research articles can be browsed, downloaded and viewed without registering, but if you wish to search the BioMed Central site, you do need to register. Registration is free.

Criminal Justice Abstracts (Ebsco)
This contains hundreds of criminal justice related abstracts from current books, book chapters, journal articles, government reports and more with worldwide coverage.

Criminology: A SAGE Full-Text Collection  
This collection includes the full-text of 15 journals published by SAGE and participating societies. Some journals going back twenty years and cover subjects such as Criminal Justice, Juvenile Delinquency, Juvenile Justice, Corrections, Penology, Policing, Forensic Psychology, and Family and Domestic Violence.

Emerald Fulltext  
This contains from over 100 management journals, complete with full text archives back to 1994. It covers the major management disciplines including strategy, leadership, information management, marketing and human resource management.

Ingenta 
Ingenta provides citations and table of contents information to more than 20,000 journals. Searching is by author or keyword or you can browse the table of contents of specific journals. 

JSTOR  
JSTOR is a digital archive collection of core scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. It contains the entire runs of each journal from the first volume up to those published 2 to 5 years ago. By agreement with the publishers JSTOR maintains a moving 2 to 5 year lag in most recent holdings available.

Lexis-Nexis  
This online database service provides full-text information for major newspapers (domestic and international), journals and periodicals, reports, transcripts and more. A password is required - See Academic Universe for a limited but web-based version available within the NPS domain.

Lexis Nexis Academic 
LexisNexis offers two major databases  for NPS users: LexisNexis and LexisNexis Academic.  This one, LexisNexis Academic is designed with a simplified search interface, uses a targeted subset of LexisNexis, and requires no special password. (NPS users of LexisNexis Academic are proxy-authenticated.) Documents come from a huge variety of newspapers, news wires, magazines, news weblogs, broadcast transcripts and more, and are provided in full-text (ASCII text only, no graphics).  If you need additional information about differences between this product and the larger LexisNexis (as well as the necessary password for LexisNexis) please Ask a Librarian.  

ProQuest Government Periodicals 
The U.S. government agencies publish approximately 170 magazines and newsletters with substantial research value. Government Periodicals Universe provides detailed subject and author indexing to access this body of literature and is updated quarterly (March, June, Sept, and December). Each update covers more than 2,000 articles of research value. 

Management & Organization Studies: A SAGE Full-Text Collection  
This includes the full text of 36 journals published by SAGE and participating societies. Some journals going back thirty-four years. It covers such subjects as: Business & Management, Organizations Studies, Management, Strategic Management and Business Policy, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Development, , Marketing, Analytical Marketing, Sociology, Sociology of Work, Public Policy and Public Administration, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management, Labor Economics, Industrial Relations, Small Business/Entrepreneurship, Organizational communication and Interpersonal Communication.

Political Science: A SAGE Full-Text Collection (SAGE)
This collection includes the full text of peer-reviewed journals published by SAGE and participating societies covering such subjects as General Political Science, American Government Politics, Political Sociology, Comparative Politics, Policy Studies, Political Communication, Peace/Conflict Studies, Presidential Studies, Political Theory/Philosophy, International Relations, and Area Studies.

Project Muse  
This provides access to the full-text of over 100 university press journals in the humanities, social sciences and mathematics.

ProQuest  
This provides indexing, abstracting and in many cases, image and/or text files of periodical articles relating to political science, religion, law, history, current events and more.

PsycINFO 
PsycINFO provides access to international literature in psychology and related disciplines. Unrivaled in its depth of psychological coverage and respected worldwide for its high quality, the database is enriched with literature from an array of disciplines related to psychology such as psychiatry, education, business, medicine, nursing, pharmacology, law, linguistics, and social work. Nearly all records contain non evaluative summaries, and all records from 1967 to the present are indexed using the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms.

PubMed Central 
PubMed Central is a digital archive of life sciences journal literature, developed and managed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).

ScienceDirect [Elsevier]
Access to the searching science, social science and business related journals and books. Access to the articles is dependent on NPS having a subscription but a is good discovery tool for scholarly related information  that can be requested through our Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery service for NPS faculty, staff and students

Scirus
This site searches articles, conference papers, patents, pre-print articles, institutional repositories and more. This is the electronic version of the ABC POL SCI indexes referenced above and provides indexing and abstracting for periodical literature in the areas of: political science, international relations, law and public administration/policy.

AGRICOLA
This National Agricultural Library database is an article citation database which covers journal articles, book chapters, short reports and reprints.

Aviation Safety Communiqué (SAFECOM) database
This database fulfills the Aviation Mishap Information System (AMIS) requirements for aviation mishap reporting for the Department of Interior agencies and the US Forest Service. Categories of reports include incidents, hazards, maintenance, and airspace.

CE-DAT [Complex Emergency Database]
"The Complex Emergency Database (CE-DAT) is a publicly-accessible online database aimed at improving evidence-based policy on conflict prevention and response. The database covers over 40 countries around the world which are affected by complex emergencies."

CQ Homeland Security  
CQ Homeland Security is a one-stop web-based intelligence service offering up-to-date and comprehensive homeland security information. It provides daily news and analysis on the latest homeland security spending and policy issues and access to a special homeland security version of CQ schedules, complete with event dates, times and hearing room.

Congressional Researcher  
This full-text database provides information on current and controversial issues in areas such as economic, social, political and international affairs. Each report includes historical background, milestones, the current situation and outlook and the pros and cons of each issue.

DoE Energy Citations Database (ECD) 
The ECD provides an free access to over 2 million citations and over 140,000 electronic documents for Department of Energy research and development reports in physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics.

DTIC Online  
DTIC is the clearinghouse for many DoD reports and is an excellent resource. Through their PUBLIC STINET database, the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) indexes and abstracts defense-related government-sponsored scientific, technical and non-technical reports. Although most of the older references only provide an abstract, the majority of the current documents are available as full-text Image files.

EM-DAT [Emergency Events Database]: The International Disaster Database 
This contains worldwide data on the occurrence and impact of natural disasters from 1900- the present.

FEMA Information Resources Library 
This is searchable web-based collection of publicly accessible FEMA information resources including publications, guidance and policy papers, program regulations and more

GAO Reports
Provides access to the full text of most of the reports published by this agency which serves as a "watchdog" organization for Congress. Coverage begins with FY 1995.

Global Terrorism Database
National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START)
The Global Terrorism Database (GTD) is an open-source database including information on terrorist events around the world since 1970 (currently updated through 2004). Unlike many other event databases, the GTD includes systematic data on international as well as domestic terrorist incidents that have occurred during this time period and now includes almost 80,000 cases. For each GTD incident, information is available on the date and location of the incident, the weapons used and nature of the target, the number of casualties, and -- when identifiable -- the identity of the perpetrator.

Hazardous Substance Release and Health Effects Database [HazDat Database]
"HazDat, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database, is the scientific and administrative database developed to provide access to information on the release of hazardous substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events and on the effects of hazardous substances on the health of human populations."

Haz-Map Database [Occupational exposure to Hazardous Agents]
This is an "occupational toxicology database designed to link jobs to hazardous job tasks which are linked to occupational diseases and their symptoms. It is a relational database of chemicals, jobs and diseases"

Health Library for Disasters [HELID]
This library is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and provides access to electronic documents on public health resources related to emergency preparedness and response and complex emergencies. Lessons Learned Information Sharing [LLIS] 
LLIS.gov is the national network of Lessons Learned and Best Practices for emergency response providers and homeland security officials.

MIPT Lawson Library
This site from the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism [MIPT] provides  information for the first responder community and those seeking sources related to terrorism research.

National Ag Safety Database
This site provides information and resources related to safety and health issues in agriculture operations.

National Counterterrorism Center Worldwide Incidents Tracking System (WITS) 
Analyze the NCTC's terrorist incidents data in relation to dozens of geographic, political, and infrastructure characteristics using GIS-based mapping of incidents, custom terrorism analysis wizard, predefined statistical reports and browsable incident data directory.

National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) 
The NCJRS Abstracts Database is one of the largest criminal and juvenile justice libraries and databases in the world. The collection, with holdings from the early 1970s to the present, contains more than 180,000 publications, reports, articles, and audiovisual products from the United States and around the world. These resources include statistics, research findings, program descriptions, congressional hearing transcripts, and training materials. The NCJRS sponsoring agencies publish hundreds of reports and other information products each year. Most of the titles are available online through the NCJRS Web site.

National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Reporting System
The National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Reporting System is a voluntary, confidential, non-punitive and secure reporting system with the goal of improving fire fighter safety. By collecting and analyzing information on near-miss events, improvements can be made in command, education, operations and training.

National Vulnerability Database (NVD)
NVD is the U.S. Government Repository for standards based vulnerability management data.

NIST Data Gateway
This provides access to over 80 NIST scientific and technical databases that cover a broad range of topics from many different scientific disciplines

ProQuest Congressional
This provides indexing for and provides access to full-text resources such as the Congressional Record and its predecessors, congressional hearings from 1824-1979 and the US Serial Set with congressional reports and documents dating back to 1789.

PubMed
"PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources"

TOXNET
TOXNET is a cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals and other related areas.

Transportation Research Board (TRB) Publications 
The Transportation Research Board publications program circulates current information and research on transportation policy and practice. The books, reports, and miscellaneous publications of the Transportation Research Board cover nine general subject categories: planning, administration, and environment; design; materials, construction, and maintenance; operations and safety; aviation; public transit; rail; freight transportation (multimodal); and marine transportation.

TRIS Online
The National Transportation Library's TRIS Database contains records of references to books, technical reports, conference proceedings, journal articles and on-going research in the field of transportation.

FedStats
FedStats provides access to official statistical information available to the public from the Federal Government. Use FedStats to track economic and population trends, education, health care costs, aviation safety, foreign trade, energy use, farm production, and more. Access official statistics collected and published by more than 100 Federal agencies without having to know in advance which agency produces them. All of the statistical information available through FedStats is maintained and updated solely by Federal agencies on their own web servers.
