This is a less comprehensive version of the Lexis Nexis database. It provides full text of news [both domestic and international], company news & financial information, federal, state & international legal materials   

Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals [AULIMP].
This provides indexing to significant articles, news items, editorials and books reviews appearing in military and aeronautical periodicals, many of which are not indexed elsewhere.

CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online) 
This provides full-text access to; working papers, conference proceedings, journal articles, books, policy briefs, links, maps, country data and more from many of the scholarly institutions and think tanks that do research in political science areas.

ProQuest
This is a great source for searching a variety of political and social science related databases including:
ASSIA: Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts, EconLit,  PAIS Archive, PAIS International, and World Political Science Abstracts

EconLit [ProQuest] 
Subject indexing and abstracts of over 400 journals, over 500 collective volumes per year, plus books, dissertations, and working papers. Contains a great deal of information about Latin America.

FBIS (Foreign Broadcast Information Service) Daily Reports 1941-1996 

Translated text of radio and television broadcasts, newspapers and periodicals, government statements, books, and other sources of unrestricted information such as databases and gray literature from non-English sources around the world.
For current reports see the Open Source Center.

Global NewsBank.  
This is very similar to the Open Source Center by providing coverage of international issues and events. Information is from 1500 international sources including translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals and government documents. Also included is an archive of 35 19th and 20th Century Latin American newspapers from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Venezzuela and elsewhere.

Ingenta 
Ingenta provides citations and table of contents information to over 20,000 journals. Searching is by author or keyword or you can browse the table of contents of specific journals. NPS faculty, staff and students can setup a profile to receive the table of content information of any journal. Ingenta indexes or to be alerted to new articles on topics of interest. Information and access is available from the library's databases page.

Jane's Online
This provides full-text access to many of the Jane's publications (e.g. All the World's Aircraft, Jane's Fighting Ships etc.) including their periodicals. It also provides access to the Jane's Sentinel Country Risk Assessment series

JSTOR  
JSTOR is a digital archive collection of core scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. It contains the entire runs of each journal from the first volume up to those published 2 to 5 years ago. By agreement with the publishers JSTOR maintains a moving 2 to 5 year lag in most recent holdings available.

Latin American Newspapers
This provides access to more than 35 19th and 20th century Latin American newspapers.  Countries covered include: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.

Latam-Studies
This is a full-text online database providing access to research, journal articles and more for research on Latin America and the Caribbean.  Most content is in Spanish.

Lexis-Nexis  
This online database service provides full-text information for major newspapers (domestic and international), journals and periodicals, reports, transcripts and more. A password is required, please see a librarian.

Lexis-Nexis Academic
This product provides access to a large variety of newspapers, news wires, broadcast transcripts, legal information and more. Coverage is for both domestic and international sources and some sources are in Spanish.

Open Source Center  
Formerly known as FBIS, Open Source Center reports are translations of foreign radio and TV broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, books and periodicals. They contain "political, military, economic, environmental, and sociological news, commentary and other information." From 1996 forward this information is available via the Internet but because it is classified as "For Official Use Only" only those with DoD IDs will be logged in. For information prior to 1996, indexes for individual regions are available with the actual reports on microfiche. PAIS [ProQuest] 
This provides indexing for the latest books, periodical articles and government publications in various areas including business, economics, social conditions and international relations.

Project Muse 
Full-text access to over 100 university press journals in the humanities, social sciences and mathematics. Coverage for most journals begins in 1995.

ProQuest Research Library 
Covers of a broad range of subjects including arts, business, children, education, general interest, health, humanities, international, law, military, multicultural, psychology, sciences, social sciences, and women's interests.

Social Sciences Citation Index 
The Social Sciences Citation Index® provides access to current and retrospective bibliographic information, author abstracts, and cited references found in over 1,700 of the world's leading scholarly social sciences journals covering more than 50 disciplines. SocIndex with Full Text [Ebsco] 
This comprehensive sociology research database contains the citations, abstracts, and often the full text of journals, books, conference papers and other materials, encompassing areas such as criminology & criminal justice, demography, economic development, ethnic and racial studies, social psychology, and other sub-disciplines.

Staff College Automated Military Periodicals Index [SCAMPI].
Developed to support the curriculum of the Armed Forces Staff College, this is similar to the Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals and provides selected citations to journal articles and selected documents and reports. Subject, author and keyword indexing is provided

World Newspaper Archive - Latin American Newspapers
More than 35 nineteenth- and twentieth-century Latin American newspapers. Featuring titles from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and elsewhere.

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts [ProQuest]  
This database is the result of merging Political Science Abstracts and ABC POL Sci and it provides citations and abstract of the international serials literature in political science, international relations, law, public administration and policy, military policy and more.

Reference Sources

Background Notes.
Published by the U.S. Department of State and updated as necessary, these provide 3-4 page "thumbnail" sketches of each country. Headings indicating areas of coverage include: geography, people, government, economy, history, political condition, foreign relations and more.

Credo Reference
This source compiles essential and factual information form specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference sources.

Congressional Budget Justification for Foreign Operations
This annual source from the State Department provides programmatic and country level budget tables and requests for foreign operations and foreign aid.  Also see the US Overseas Loans and Grant [Greenbook]

Global Legal Information Network (GLIN)
From the Law Library of Congress, this is a public database of official texts of laws, regulations, judicial decisions, and other legal sources contributed by governmental agencies and international organizations.

KOSIMO/COSIMO
KOSIMO is the name of a database containing (at this time) 693 political conflicts from 1945 to 1999. Each conflict is coded with 28 variables.  Their annual Conflict Barometer describes recent trends in conflict development, escalations and settlements

Lexis Nexis Congressional  
This provides access to the Congressional Record and its predecessors, congressional reports and documents and indexing to published and unpublished congressional hearings since1789.

Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
This is the most comprehensive index for referencing many of the documents published by the U.S. Government. Updated regularly, this includes reference to documents published by the DoD, State Department, Congress and most other federal agencies. When available, hyperlinks to electronic documents are included in the records.

The Military Balance.  
This provides a quantitative assessment of the world's military forces and their defense expenditure. Also has brief information and statistics regarding UN Peacekeeping operations.

NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research)
Founded in 1920, this is a private, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization conducting economic research on topics of interest worldwide.

SIPRI Yearbook. [Stockholm International Peace Research Institute]
Categories of coverage include: global and regional security and conflicts, weapons and technology proliferation, military expenditures, arms productions and trade, and arms control and disarmament. This includes some major documents and speeches as is well indexed.
Some information is available from the SIPRI web site including data on military expenditures, arms transfer, arms embargoes, arms industry and multilateral peace operations 

ProQuest Congressional
This includes access to the Congressional Records and its predecessors, congressional hearings (published and unpublished) and congressional reports and documents from 1789 on.  

ProQuest Statistical 
This database searches and provides summaries of statistical publications produced by state, federal and international agencies as well as non-government entities. When available, links to the full-text of selected publications are provided.

OFFSTATS: Official Statistics on the Web
Links to official international statistics sites offering global, regional and national statistics including demographics, economics, finance, crime and religion.

Public Opinion Poll information
This NPS Library page provides a list of links for free and commercial opinion poll websites.

US Overseas Loans and Grants [Greenbook]
The Greenbook shows a complete historical record of United States' (U.S.) foreign aid to the rest of the world by reporting all loans and grants authorized by the U.S. Government for each fiscal year. Users can access standard tables already constructed, or create custom tables and reports by selecting recipient countries, years and type of USG assistance. Data is available in either historical or constant dollars.

The World Factbook [formerly National Basic Intelligence Factbook]
Published annually by the CIA, this gives brief statistical sketches of each country. Contents headings include: Map, Flag, Geography, People, Government, Economy, Transportation, Communications and Defense.]

Yearbook of the United Nations.
1957-
This covers broad topics such as political and security questions, regional questions, economic and social questions, trusteeship and decolonization, legal questions, and international organizations related to the UN. Major UN resolutions and decisions are reprinted.

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

Historical Dictionaries of…. [series]
Each volume covers a difference country and the entries are in the form of brief paragraphs containing introductory information on historical, political and socio-economic topics. Each volume also contains an introductory chapter with a historical overview of the country and includes a chronology on major events.

Other

Country Studies [former known as Army Area Handbooks]
A continuing series of books prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. Most books in the series deal with a particular foreign country, describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. The volumes each contain illustrations, charts, maps and a bibliography.

Complied and updated by the library staff at the University of Texas at San Antonio, this provides extensive links to online publications (including newspapers and magazines) from Latin American Countries.


Maps

The Library has a growing collection of maps of various sizes, scales and content. Information on our map collection is available  here. A variety of maps published by the CIA make good briefing maps. We also have nautical, topographic and aeronautical charts as well as an increasing number of CD-ROM products. Most of these maps are NOT in BOSUN so please see a reference librarian. References to atlases can, however, be found by searching BOSUN.

The Perry-Castañeda Library at the University of Texas has made available national maps for all parts of the world. Of particular interest is its The address for its Maps of the Americas collection.  Also of interest is the Comparative Atlas of Defence in Latin America.  The link provides access to various editions in both English and Spanish..


Electronic Resources

Declassified Documents Reference System [DDRS]
This is an excellent source. With coverage back to 1945, it provides access to more than 70,000 declassified documents from various government agencies (e.g. CIA, DoD, FBI, NSC, Dept of State etc.). Currently the index is on CD-ROM and the documents are available on microfiche but we hope to have access to the Internet version soon.

U.S. students and faculty can also register for the DTIC Controlled Access Database. This provides access to the same information as described above but also includes access to unclassified/limited distribution information including many full-text reports.

Latin American Network Information Center (LANIC).
This system is akin to an online central clearinghouse providing connection to internet resources, both free and commercial, which pertain to Latin America. It is managed by the UT Institute of Latin American Studies and is available to all Internet users. The UTNetCat is a web-based version of the library catalog of the University of Texas at Austin. It includes full-bibliographic descriptions of the print and non-print holdings of the Benson Latin American Collection.

This is an annotated bibliography of books, chapters in books, reports and articles in the humanities and social sciences, pertaining to Latin America. Since this is a US Library of Congress project, web access to this database is free.

A variety of online documents.

LANIC EText Collection
This site provides full-text resources including speeches delivered by Argentine and Mexican presidents; translations of speeches, interviews, and press conferences by Fidel Castro; research papers written by Latin American studies scholars; theses and dissertations; etext versions of books; conference proceedings; and official documents.  Some of the etext are in Spanish and others are in English.

Latin America Bibliography
Done in 2002 by the Air University Library, this bibliography covers the Latin American countries and includes topics such as security and defense, trade relations, politics and government, foreign relations etc. and updated in 2007.  See also Colombia,

This site provides links to sites with digital collections of speeches, pamphlets, historic legislation, declassified documents and more.  Many of the sources are available with English translations.

Latin American Open Archives Portal (LAOAP)
LAOAP is a portal service providing access to social sciences grey literature produced in Latin America by research institutes, non-governmental organizations, and peripheral agencies. It encompasses working documents, pre-prints, research papers, statistical documents, and other difficult-to-access materials that are not controlled by commercial publishers.

The Literature of Intelligence: A Bibliography of Materials, with Essays, Reviews, and Comments : Latin America section
This is a good bibliography of sources related to intelligence activities in Latin American.

The Oxford Latin American Economic History Database (OxLAD) contains statistical series for a wide range of economic and social indicators covering twenty countries in the region for the period 1900-2000. Its purpose is to provide economic and social historians worldwide with a systematic recompilation of available statistical information in a single on-line source.

Political Database of the Americas [Georgetown U]
This is one of the best online sites for finding current political information on the Americas. It contains constitutions, electoral laws, calendars, and statistics as well as links to embassy sites and up-to-date lists of cabinet members.
