Reports

Government and other agencies produce a wide variety of defense-related reports that are relevant to research in all School of Business and Public Policy curricula. The Library owns many of these reports in print or in microfiche, and a growing number are available on the Internet at no charge. If you are an NPS student, faculty or staff member doing mission-related research, if we don't have it, we can probably get it for you! The following list of agencies producing defense-related reports is not comprehensive - consult the Library's web site for additional resources.

Center for Defense Management Research
This NPS Graduate School of Business & Public Policy Center performs research on business management reform in National Defense.  Many of their reports as well as descriptions of future projects are posted on this site.

Center for Naval Analyses (CNA)
CNA analysts perform federally funded research for the Navy and Marine Corps on such subjects as National Defense Policy, Humanitarian and Peace Operations, Naval Operational Policy, Business Practices and Processes, Military Health Care, and lots more. From their web site you can search for selected abstracts. We own many CNA reports. Please also check in our Restricted Resources and Services library (located on the first deck of Dudley Knox Library), since many CNA reports are limited to Government or DoD only, and may be difficult to locate elsewhere. CNA only sends selected reports to DTIC (see below).

DTIC Online

Through the Public Technical Reports database, the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) indexes and abstracts defense-related government-sponsored scientific and technical reports. This includes management, logistics, acquisition, contracting, transportation, and other areas that we don't necessarily think of as "technical." The library owns some of these reports in print, and has nearly all of them available on microfiche. The version linked here provides access to all unclassified, unlimited citations since 1975. Private STINET provides access to all citations since 1975 as described above, plus citations to documents limited to government and DoD only. In addition, a growing number of reports on Private STINET are provided full text. Access to Private STINET is limited to U.S. students, faculty and staff, and requires an individual password. DoD Inspector General Publications
Audit and Evaluation Reports
DoD IG Testimony
The DoD Inspector General is responsible for conducting, supervising, monitoring and initiating audits and investigations of the programs and operations of DoD. Many of their reports are available full text online, and the Library owns many in print.

Government Accountability Office (GAO) Reports
formerly General Accounting Office
The Government Accountability Office is the investigative arm of Congress and produces reports on a wide range of subjects of interest to Congress, including many that are defense-related. All publicly released GAO reports from 1995 onward are available full text. We own many in print as well.

Logistics Management Institute
Logistics Management Institute is a private, non-profit corporation providing government with management advice. Areas of interest include: Acquisition; Facilities, Environment, and Asset Management; Financial Management; Information and Technology; Intelligence Programs; Logistics; and Organizations and Human Capital. Also included is information on Healthcare, Energy, and Enterprise Architecture Development. Many are defense-related. From their web site you can search for online abstracts of all publicly released reports. Dudley Knox Library owns many LMI reports in print. LMI sends many of their reports to DTIC.

Rand
Rand produces analyses of a wide variety of national public policy issues, including defense, international relations and regional studies, among others. From their web site you can search for abstracts and obtain selected reports full text. The Library owns many Rand reports. Rand sends many of their reports to DTIC. Full text online Rand Publications includes reports on such things as Logistics, Military Manpower, Military Strategy and Tactics, and Systems Acquisitions.

Provides citations from military-specific journals. Coverage begins in 1988.

Business Source Complete  
From EBSCO - Click on Business Source Complete
Provides indexing, abstracting and often the full text of business and management journals, including the full text of the Harvard Business Review! Additional full text, non-journal content includes financial data, books, major reference works, conference proceedings, case studies, investment research reports, industry reports, market research reports, country reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses and more.

CSA  
Formerly known as Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Provides access to a variety of scientific and technical databases. The NTIS (National Technical Information Service) database is particularly relevant. With coverage starting in 1964, it indexes and abstracts federally-sponsored scientific and technical reports. In addition to the hard sciences, its coverage includes disciplines such as management, information technology, and sociology. Also available in Cambridge Scientific Abstracts ar ERIC (covers the education literature), ECONLIT (covers the economics literature), World Political Science Abstracts, PsycINFO (covers the psychology literature), and Management & Organization Studies: A SAGE Full Text Collection.

Emerald Fulltext  
Contains full text articles from over 100 management and other journals from MCB University press, with archives back to 1994. Covers major management disciplines including strategy, leadership, information management, marketing and human resource management.

CQ Weekly and CQ Researcher  
CQ Weekly includes searchable full text of this well-known print magazine covering legislative news and analysis. Coverage begins with 1983. CQ Researcher contains reports on controversial issues of the day with complete summaries, pros and cons, and bibliographies. Coverage begins with 1991.

Ingenta  
The Ingenta Library Gateway is a searchable database of more than 11 million citations from over 20,000 journals. Selected articles are available full text.

Jane's Online  
Provides the full text of Jane's publications including periodicals and other series such as Jane's Fighting Ships and All the World's Aircraft.

JSTOR  
JSTOR is a digital archive collection of core scholarly journals in business, humanities, social sciences and sciences. It contains the entire runs of each journal from the first volume up to those published 2 to 5 years ago. By agreement with the publishers JSTOR maintains a moving 2 to 5 year lag in most recent holdings available.

LexisNexis Academic  
This Lexis-Nexis resource provides access to a wide range of full text news, magazines and journals, business, company and financial, legal, medical, and reference information. The Library also provides a more comprehensive version of Lexis-Nexis that may be used in the library.

ProQuest  
Provides access to a wide variety of newspapers and journals, including the full text of the Wall St. Journal. Find research on computers, the military, management, economics, business, human resources, finance, taxation, applied science and technology, and more. Many of the articles are available full text (some with images). Others are abstract only.

Science Direct  
Provides the ability to search and in some cases access the full text articles from hundreds of journals published by Elsevier and Pergamon. It includes economics, management, decision sciences, education and public policy journals. See also Torpedo Ultra which provides access to additional Elsevier and Pergamon journals that we may not have accessible through Science Direct.

They also cover individually selected, relevant items from approximately 3,300 of the world’s leading science and technology journals. Dudley Knox Library’s subscription covers articles and papers published from 1965-present.

Staff College Automated Military Periodicals Index (SCAMPI)
Provides selected citations to journal articles, documents and reports. Access is via the Military Education and Research Library Network (MERLN).

Torpedo Ultra  
Access to the full text of selected journals published by Elsevier Science and Naval Research Laboratory Formal and Memorandum Reports, NRL-authored journal articles and conference papers, and NRL Press Releases.

American Management Association

Statistical Resources on the Web
This resource from the University of Michigan provides comprehensive links to the best statistical resources on the web, organized by category.

LexisNexis Statistical  
A web-based version of several indexes of statistical information from federal government agencies (such as the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Defense, and the Department of transportation), non-federal public and private organizations (such as associations and institutes, businesses, research centers, state governments, and universities), and international intergovernmental organizations (such as the United Nations, Organization for Economic cooperation and development, and the Organization of American States). Provides searchable indexing and links to full text documents, when available.

Population Reference Bureau
Find articles, statistics and data sets (based on Census Bureau statistics) on population-related topics.

STAT-USA  
STAT-USA is run by the U.S. Department of Commerce. It provides a central location on the internet for statistics prepared by most Federal Agencies. Password available at the reference desk.

Brookings Institution
The Brookings Institution produces books, policy briefs and other studies on Economics, Foreign Policy, and Government. Some of the policy briefs are available free on their site. Selected books are also available online on such topics as defense policy, economics, education, government and politics, international affairs, and more. The Library owns or can obtain most Brookings publications, and we subscribe to their journals.

Cato Institute
The Cato Institute is a non-profit public policy research foundation with a libertarian (minimal government intervention) perspective. On their web site you can find full text papers on such topics as social security, the federal budget, military spending, and more. The Cato Journal and Cato Policy Report are also available full text.

Center for Defense Information
This private research organization's web site includes research and commentary covering a wide variety of military issues including military spending, the military industrial complex, arms trade, and lots more. Their publication The Defense Monitor is available online from 1997 onward.

Center for Strategic and International Studies
This non-profit, bi-partisan research organization looks mainly at security issues but also produces books and other reports on issues like Social Security, arms trade, and military spending. Some of their reports are provided full text online at no charge, while others must be purchased.

Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments
CSBA is an independent, nonprofit public policy research institute Research areas include: Military Strategy and Policy, Defense Budgets and Programs, Weapon Systems and Critical Technologies, Military Personnel and Readiness, Military Revolutions and Future Warfare, Transformation of the Military, and Defense Industry. Their site includes a variety of defense budget statistics and a primer about the defense budget process.

Concise Encyclopedia of Economics
This free online encyclopedia of economics terms and concepts is edited by GSBPP faculty member David R. Henderson.

Conference Board Business Knowledge Research  
The Conference Board's database of business and economic information and analysis.

CQ Budget Tracker  
CQ Budget Tracker pulls together information on one page for the House and Senate version of each appropriations bill.  Reporting on key decision points including hearings, markups, amendments, and conference coverage.  You can track appropriations documents from the draft stage through the conference report.  CQ Budget Tracker lets you search the complete text of committee reports, including the charts that hold the most elusive line items.  

InsideDefense
Includes full text access to Inside the Pentagon, Inside the Navy, Inside the Army, Inside the Air Force, and Inside Missile Defense. InsideDefense.com is a multifaceted new service featuring thousands of articles and documents, daily news and special reports on Defense Department programs, procurement and policymaking.

LexisNexis Congressional  
Provides searchable indexing and links to the full text of Congressional hearings, reports and other documents, when available.

Defense and the National Interest
This site provides links to a wealth of full text reports on a wide variety of military topics including the defense budget and expenditures, acquisition reform, financial systems, the QDR, weapons systems cost and effectiveness, and lots more.

Dismal Scientist
Financial and business news, industry forecasts, a monthly Economic Calendar of statistical releases, a dictionary of economic and financial terms, and calculators for the Consumer Price Index, Producer Price Index, value of a dollar, stock valuations and more.

Federation of American Scientists
This privately funded non-profit policy organization analyzes science, technology and public policy concerning global security. Their web site links to a gold mine of full text articles, reports and other documents. Some of the many subjects that will be of interest to GSBPP faculty and students are arms sales monitoring, public policy application of new information technologies, government secrecy, and various analyses of military operations and spending.

Harvard Business School Publishing
Links to the Harvard Business Review (including article abstracts) and the Harvard Business School Publishing catalog. This is a great resource to search for article summaries, case study descriptions, and books on such topics as accounting and finance, organizational change, economics, knowledge management, marketing, leadership, innovation, and other topics of interest to business and management research.

Heritage Foundation
Conservative think tank that looks at public policy issues such as the federal budget, missile defense, crime, education ,energy, government reform, health care policy, technology, national security, social security, and more.

Hoovers Online
Industry and company profiles, news, and links. A mix of free and purchasable information. We have Hoovers Company Profiles through ProQuest (on our Databases page).

Hudson Institute
This public policy research organization forecasts trends and develops solutions for governments, businesses and the public.

International Monetary Fund
See particularly their semi-annual report on the World Economic Outlook, which examines recent world economic developments and future prospects.

Lexington Institute
The Lexington Institute analyzes public policy issues such as such as education reform, tax rate reduction, regulatory policy, and national defense. They believe that the government's role should be strictly limited, and they therefore strive to find market-based solutions to public-policy issues.

National Academy of Public Administration
The National Academy of Public Administration is an independent, nonpartisan organization chartered by Congress to assist federal, state, and local governments in improving their effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability.

National Bureau of Economic Research  
The NBER is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. Research is conducted by scholars around the country. Many full text working papers are available for downloading.

Project on Defense Alternatives
Includes full text research analyses on US and international military policy. Recent available reports are on such topics as the Revolution in Military Affairs, Chinese Military Policy, the QDR, military intervention, and more.

Resources for Methods in Evaluation and Social Research
Developed by researchers at the State University of New York at Albany, the page links to resources for methods in evaluation and social research. The focus is on "how-to" do evaluation research and the methods used: surveys, focus groups, sampling, interviews, and other methods.

Social Science Research Network
SSRN
We don't currently subscribe to this site. However, it provides free access to many full text articles and papers. Related linked sites include Accounting Research Network, Economics Research Network, Information Systems Network, and more.
