1. Arrival / Temporary Quarters
Transient BOQ space is extremely limited. However, if given appropriate arrival information advance, the International Programs Office will coordinate reservations with the BOQ for the first 30 days of a new student’s stay at NPS. Our new Navy Lodge is also available with room rates of $58.00 per night. If BOQ or Navy Lodge is unavailable, it is recommended that the student (and his family) be prepared to stay in a hotel for the first week or so while checking out the housing situation (average cost $50-79 per night per room depending on location and season). Reservations can be made with RESORT TO ME at (800) 757-5646 or (408) 646-9250. This is an agency that will locate accommodations to fit their needs; all that is needed is to call, tell them how many people, preferred area, and preferred price range. (Best bet would be Monterey near NPS [also will be more affordable]. Obviously if student chooses to stay (or live) in Pebble Beach or Carmel, prices will be considerably higher). Reservations need to be guaranteed with a credit card.

BOQ charge is $15.00 per day and $2.50 for each additional authorized person.

Another possibility is SunBay (located on what used to be Ft Ord - approx 6 miles from NPS) at (800) 285-3131 or (831) 394-2515 - they have furnished apartments that they rent weekly or monthly.

2. Permanent Quarters
a. Married students with authorized family members may apply for government housing in La Mesa Village as soon as they arrive in Monterey and check into the International Office. The student will complete a housing application and our office will provide him with a cover letter stating he has been in-processed. Government housing (unfurnished) is available to International students on a space available basis at a cost of $753.09 per month (includes all utilities except for telephone and cable television). The wait for government housing averages between 3 – 6 months, based on rank, family size, and the turnaround time on housing maintenance. If the student’s family will be joining him at a later date, he may sign for keys to government housing up to 2 weeks prior to their arrival. Arrival information should be provided via fax as soon as available.

b. There is no government housing available for Single Officers and Geographical Bachelors. Previously utilized houses for bachelor officer’s have been demolished because they were determined to be unserviceable. At present, there is no funding designated for replacements.

3. IMET Living Allowance Tables

4. Civilian Housing Options
a. Average cost of a one bedroom apartment (unfurnished) is $700-$850 per month plus utilities. Basic Cable begins at $15 and up per month. Basic telephone with no special services (i.e., call waiting, call forwarding, etc,) is approximately $20 per month. There are several long distance companies to choose from. Utilities vary by apartment and usage. Two bedroom apartments start at $650 per month.

b. The NPS Housing Welcome Center has established an excellent we site for reviewing rental options in Monterey. Check out the following site: http://www.dodreferral.com

5. Miscellaneous
a. Furniture Locker. The International Committee maintains a Furniture Locker, which contains used furniture that may be “rented” for a nominal fee by international students during their stay at NPS.

b. Navy Supply Furniture. Some items of government furniture are available for use by international families living in the military housing in La Mesa village. Type and quantity of furniture is dependent on items on hand at the time of check-in. There is no guarantee that a full set of furniture will be available for every request.
