Transition to Teaching is a grant, funded
by the U.S. Department of Education, designed
to recruit talented and committed recent
college graduates and mid-career professionals,
who have either resided in or have had experiences
with urban communities. The Transition to
Teaching program is a one-year program that
begins in July and ends in June and provides
an alternative certification route to acquire
the training and licenses required to teach
in the public school systems of Virginia
or Maryland. Program participants will be
trained as teachers and placed in high-need,
urban school districts in either Prince
George's County, MD or Alexandria City,
VA. The Transition to Teaching program consists
of the following components: a summer training,
paid tuition for up to eighteen graduate
credits towards certification and/or a Master's
degree at Howard University School of Education,
a full-time, three-year teaching contract
with one of the partnering school districts,
classroom support and professional development,
and a stipend of up to $5,000 by the completion
of the program.
