About the NPS OCL Faculty Development Group
Teaching in a distributed setting begins with effective planning. OCL Instructional designers use a systematic process to help faculty plan, design, and develop distributed learning environments. The centralized organization maximizes the educational resources and support available for faculty.
Interactive Distributed Learning (IDL) Course for NPS Faculty
The IDL Course is a media-enhanced "M" non-credit course for faculty that models how to teach online using a combination of Web-based (online) learning modules, face-to-face seminar sessions, and hands-on workshops. The purpose of this course is to help faculty succeed as they plan, design and develop their own fully web-based "W" or "M" class, using an instructional design process that integrates learning theories and applications for the online environment.
Each faculty will work with an instructional designer to create a module or unit of learning using either new materials or adapting current materials for online delivery. Faculty will also learn to use the Blackboard learning management system to create their online course sites.

Online Interactive Distributed Learning (OIDL) Course for NPS Faculty and Non-NPS Faculty
This course prepares you to develop and teach effective and engaging interactive online courses. It provides a foundation of distance education theory and application through the hands-on experience of being an online student. A primary result of the course is the development of online learning materials specific to your current teaching purpose - an enhanced syllabus and a learning module or unit with assignments and interactions. Working with an instructional designer and the NPS OCL support team in a focused, yet flexible structure you will gain practical knowledge, skills and experience to create your course framework.
