Theme projects create focal points for faculty
from diverse academic areas to connect and share
related research. Our theme projects are selected
as reflections of issues relevant to National
Security with both technical and social dimensions.
Around these themes, we organize research symposia,
host visiting speakers and collaborators, and
facilitate a brown bag lunch series, all of which
serve as hubs for our cross discipline studies.
Hastily Formed Networks (05-06)
Our current theme project addresses the issues
arising in emergency response to crises such as
the 9/11 attacks and natural disasters such as
the 2005 Indian Ocean Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.
These demand the combined actions of people in
a network of multiple organizations with no common
authority, who must cooperate and collaborate.

The World Wide Consortium
for the Grid (04-05)
As a result of the Battlespace Communication
Architecture project, a major Institute initative
began in FY 05. For further
details.
Battlespace Communication Architecture
(03-04)
This project explored reference models for network
centric operations. Twenty-five faculty and their
students participated in studies at organization,
systems and technology levels. In cooperation
with SPAWAR (San Diego) we studied reference models
at the technology, systems and operations levels.
A major result of these studies was formation
of W2COG to create ongoing process to reach consensus
on architecture issues.
