Lt. Michael Jay Tozzi, a surface warfare officer and Mechanical Engineering master’s student at the Naval Postgraduate School, received the Bronze Star Medal for exceptionally meritorious service during Operation Iraqi Freedom, at a special ceremony in the International Flag Garden, Aug. 5. “I sat on the Navy Awards Board before coming to NPS, and I can tell you that for a U.S. Navy lieutenant to receive this Army award is rare and very noteworthy,” said Dean of Students Capt. A faculty team from the Naval Postgraduate School Department of Computer Science has won the best paper award at the Second IEEE International Conference on Secure System Integration and Reliability Improvement (SSIRI) held in Yokohama, Japan, July 14-17. The winning paper by Professor James Bret Michael (left rear) and Associate Professors Man-Tak Shing (front right), Doron Drusinsky (right rear) and Thomas Otani (front left), “Validating UML Statechart-based Assertions Libraries for Improved Reliability and Assurance,” developed the vision of star alumnus Dr. Butch Caffall, now director of NASA’s Independent Verification and Validation Facility. Caffall earned his master’s (Software Engineering, 2003) and doctoral (Software Engineering, 2005) degrees through NPS’s distance learning program while at the Missile Defense Agency and NASA, and was promoted to chief architect and technical director for the Command, Control, Battle Management, Communications element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System while in the M.S. program.
