1. Per reference (a), the MWR Advisory Board Meeting commended at 1010 on Wednesday, 7 July 1999 in the La Novia Room, Herrmann Hall, Naval Postgraduate School (NAVPGSCOL).
2. Ms. Ryan asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the 6 May 1999 meeting. Mr. Tanner made a motion to approve the minutes as written, and Ms. Gale seconded the motion.
3. Old business:
a. LCDR Rowley asked if fishing is allowed at Lake Del Monte and if a permit is necessary.
Response: Ms. Ryan confirmed that fishing is allowed at Lake Del Monte. Ms. Ryan read an e-mail message from CDR Smith, Public Works Officer, which states that the lake has bass, catfish, carp, crayfish, turtles, frogs, crappie, bluegill, and gambusia (mosquito fish) that we have seen. Adults need a fishing license and Cal Fish and Game rules apply.
b. Ms. Megan Ryan, MWR Director:
(1) The interior of the restrooms at the golf course picnic area have been painted. The exterior of the restrooms have not been painted because of a problem with the lead based paint. We estimate project will be completed by 23 July.
(2) The interior and exterior of the restrooms at the golf course 26th green are being painted and should be completed by 16 July.
c. Mr. Russ Gale, Athletic Director, discussed the bike rental program which is estimated to be in place by 30 September. The liability statement has been approved by the Staff Judge Advocate and has been forwarded to the MWR Director for final review.
5. New business: a. Athletics update, Mr. Russ Gale, Athletic Director:
(1) Mini Triathlon. The annual Mini Triathlon is coming, Saturday, July 24, starting at 7:30 a.m. on the Rec Trail across from the Del Monte gate. Distances covered will be a 5K run, 20K bike ride and ¼ mile swim. Call the fitness center for division and fee information at 656-3118.
(2) NAVSUPPACT MB Tennis Championships. This second annual event is slated for July 12-18 (evening and weekend competition) with both men's and women's A & B divisions. Contact the fitness center for registration information at 656-3118.
(3) New Days! SIX PACK ATTACK. The popular 15 minute abs session classes have moved to Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 to 4:45 p.m. This class is free to all fitness center eligible patrons. More information is available by calling 656-3118.
(4) Swim Lessons. Session 4 registrations open on July 13 and the session is scheduled for July 20-30. Contact the Roman Plunge Swimming Pool for details. The number is 656-2275.
(5) Jazz Dance Classes. Jazz Dance I is open to youth, ages 7 - 10, and Jazz Dance II is for the pre-teen set (11 - 13 years), and it's great fun! Students learn the basics of rhythm, coordination, and creative movement through contemporary dance styles. Included are turns, jumps, leaps and moves to upbeat music incorporating the fundamentals of dance. The class develops confidence and self-esteem through the art of self-expression. Class fees and schedule information is available by calling 656-3118. b. Golf Course update, Mr. Mike Valleau, Golf Course/RV Campground Manager
(1) Youth Golf Lessons. A special summer session aimed at instruction for junior golfers will begin on Wednesday, July 7, and run Mondays and Wednesdays through July 28. It offers seven one-hour classes in a group setting and will finish up with a tournament and barbecue on the last day. The cost is $70 and registrations will be taken at the Pro Shop. (2) Adult Golf Lessons. Beginning and intermediate private or group golf lesson classes for adults are now forming at Monterey Pines Golf Course. They will be offered weekday afternoons, weekday evenings and weekend mornings. One's sure to fit in your schedule! Classes will be taught by Steve Soule, Teaching Professional, and Nick Nelson, British PGA. Call 656-2167 for details on fees, dates and lesson plans.
(3) 40 Trees Planted on Golf Course. Public Works Environmental Office has arranged for the planting of 40 new trees on the golf course which include: Liquid Amber, Sequoia Redwoods & Maple.
(4) The 10th hole tee box will open for play on July 17, 1999. MWR has coordinated with Public Works to receive additional water from Lake Del Monte for irrigation purposes. This enables us to save our aquifer and water areas like the soccer field and driving range.
Question from LCDR Rowley: How are you getting water now?
Response from Ms. Ryan: We are currently pumping 100,000 gallons a day of excess water from Lake Del Monte.
c. Recreation update , Ms. Beth Leone-Mullins, Leisure Services Manager:
(1) Information, Tickets and Tours (ITT)
(a) Cinemacal Movie Tickets. The local Cinemacal Theatres are now under new management (Resort Theatres). Locations: Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove, Del Monte Mall and Crossroads, Carmel. Cinemacal tickets purchased from ITT will only be honored through August 31, 1999. Please use any Cinemacal tickets you may have in your possession on or before that date as they will expire and are non-refundable.
(b) Laguna Seca Super Bike Races, July 9 – 10. Ticket prices $25.50 to $60.50
(c) NPS license plate holders on sale for $9.00.
(d) Football Fans Beware! 49er Football Tickets. ITT will conduct a drawing this month for the right to purchase a pair of its 49er tickets. Contact ITT for information on how to get into the drawing or check the Public Folders.
(a) Sailing Lessons at Bluewater Cove Marina. Class size is limited to ten. The class fee of $60 covers two days of sailing instruction, your textbook, and 10 - 12 hours of sailing time. Class dates: August 28 & 29, September 25 & 26, October 16 & 17. Register at the Bluewater Cove Marina boathouse on the Coast Guard pier in downtown Monterey. Call 656-2159
d. Child Development Program update, Ms. Megan Ryan, MWR Director:
(1) “Summer Fun” - Part-Day Preschool. A few spaces are still available for our summer session (July 6 - August 13)! Children 3 - 5 years are invited to join our summer of fun either 2 or 3 mornings per week! Call 656-2734 for more details!
(2) Part-Day Preschool. Fall session. Register now--full session begins August 23/24!
(3) Full-Day Child Care. If you are in need of full-time child care, our center has openings available in some classrooms--call 656-2734.
(4) Child Development Center (CDC) Facility Improvements. The CDC interior renovation is now complete--stop by and see our new look!
(5) Our playground renovation project is in full “swing”! The completion date is July 30, 1999! Completely new outdoor environments are being created to provide more developmentally appropriate play areas for our children.
e. Club update, Ms. Kim Andersen, Food and Beverage Director (Acting):
(1) Free Concert, July 23rd, 8 p.m. to midnight, Barbara McNitt Ballroom. MWR will bring the rock band RAVE for your enjoyment. They are a 7-piece band with a full horn section. The cost to you is only a large smile. A no host bar will be provided. We will have a Seafood Buffet in the El Prado from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the same night for only $14.95. Come by and have dinner and then go upstairs to dance and have some fun. Tell your friends to come; this is an ‘all hands’ event.
(2) During the month of July our Friday lunch special in the El Prado Room is “All You Can Eat” Pizza Bar, featuring a selection of freshly baked pizza and tossed Ceasar salad for $5.00 per person.
(3) The Trident Room Wednesday night dinner special during the month of July is Roast Prime Rib with Au Jus, baked potato with sour cream and chives, fresh vegetables and chocolate cake for $10.25 (served from 4 - 9 p.m.).
(4) On September 2nd, MWR will present the Miller Lite comedy show. There will be four comedic headliners for this event. Tickets will be $5.00 for this event and will go on sale in late July at the ITT ticket office. A no host bar will be provided. We will be serving a special dinner in the El Prado beforehand. Look for further information.
a. Mr. Russ Gale, Leisure Services Manager, MWR (Acting):
(1) Mr. Gale explained that MWR is following up on suggestions to start a bike rental program and agrees that it is a great idea. APF funding has been identified and plans are underway to implement the program. More information will be available by the next MWR Advisory Board Meeting in March. Bike rentals will be available through the Fitness Center.
b. Mr. Mike Valleau, Golf Course/RV Campground Manager, MWR:
(1) Bids have been received for new safety netting between the 13th fairway and the jet center and playground/picnic area near the 11th hole.
(2) MWR tried to paint the restrooms at the picnic area and near the 16th green as a self-help project, but the paint wasn’t available. We are presently searching for a new source of paint.
(3) MWR will check on maintenance and repair funds to replace the Golf Course Club House toilets. If base maintenance and repair funding is not available, the replacement of the toilets may need to wait until the renovation project.
Response: Ms. Bizzozero expressed concern that the toilets need to be replaced sooner.
Response: Ms. Ryan will look into this for action.
5. Recreation Update, Mr. Russ Gale, Leisure Services Manager, MWR (Acting): a. Youth Center:(1) Youth Basketball Registration: Registration for the Youth Basketball Program is being taken through Friday, 8 January at the Youth Center between 1430 – 1800. This program is open to ages 7 – 14 and the cost is $35.00 per child. Please call the Youth Center for more information, 656-2127.
b. Athletics:
(1) Weights for Women Workshop: Join us on Saturday, 16 January from 0930 –1100 at the Monterey Bay Athletic Club, Bldg. 239 to learn the basics of weight training designed to meet your specific fitness goals. The workshop will cover the basic concepts of resistance training, how it benefits all women when incorporated into workout programs with demonstrations on how to operate the equipment available at the Monterey Bay Athletic Club. Please register prior to 13 January at the Monterey Bay Athletic Club reception desk. This is a free event.
c. Marina:
(a) New Year’s Sail and Maintenance Day: Saturday, 9 January is the day the MWR Marina and NPSSA will be hosting a two hour general maintenance session followed by a BBQ and then a fleet sail.
(b) Boat Repair Update: “Harriet” has been re-launched and another boat, “Storm”, from our Shields class will be the next project, making our preparations for the upcoming racing season on schedule. Now is the time to inquire about chartering one of the Shields for the racing season.

d. Information, Tickets and Tours:

· San Francisco Get Acquainted Tour 9 January, $20/person, Departs NPS 0815 and returns at 1900.
· LA Express Tour (Getty Museum, Universal Studios, Disneyland) 16-18 January, $189/person/2 Nights lodging, Departs NPS (Sat) 0515 and returns (Mon) 2200.
· Ano Nuevo State Reserve Elephant Seal Tour January 23, $20/person. Departs NPS 0815 returns 1700.
· Solvang Tour (Danish Village) Sightseeing, Shopping Tour January 30, $30/person. Departs NPS 0615 and returns 2000.
6. Child Development Program Update, Ms. Megan Ryan, Director, MWR:
a. Facility Renovation Project is nearing completion and looks great! This project includes new flooring and carpeting, interior painting, the addition of a children’s restroom facility and child height sinks, and a new front reception counter.
b. Part-Day Preschool: Openings are available in our Part-Day Preschool for children ages 3 – 5 years old. Classes are held in the morning from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in your choice of two-day (Tues & Thurs) or three-day (Mon, Wed & Fri) per week sessions. For more information, call the Child Development Center, 656-2734.
7. Facilities Update, Megan Ryan, Director, MWR: a. Golf Course Upgrade: The Project Validation Assessment (PVA) Team was here in December 1998 to conduct an analysis of all aspects of this project. The draft PVA is due any day. The Project approval process has gone forward to BUPERS for funding consideration. Ms. Ryan discussed the approval process.
b. Golf Course Well Project: Mr. Valleau and Ms. Ryan to meet next week with geohydrologists, Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC), and Public Works (PW). PW is pumping water to the golf course from Lake Del Monte in order to provide additional water. The geohydrologist took soundings of the golf course land to see where water currently exists. PW Engineering is also checking to see if a water source exists on the main campus so it can be used to supplement golf course water. An Internal Needs Validation Study (INVS) for FY01 Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) funding consideration is in progress to install a new golf course irrigation system. The deadline for this project submission is Spring 1999.
c. Tennis Court Resurfacing: The Del Monte Lake Courts are completed. The contractor is waiting for dryer conditions to complete the courts by the Arizona Garden.
8. New business:
a. CTA2 Turnbeaugh, NAVSUPPACT MB, shared her appreciation and complimented the great job on the command Christmas party.
b. Ms. Stanley, Community Activities Manager, MWR, announced that MWR has received funds from BUPERS to support recreation events for single sailors. c. Ms. Ryan, MWR Director, announced that we have hired a new Food and Beverage Director. His name is Mr. Ken Taylor. He is scheduled to arrive 1 February 1999.
d. Ms. Joan Bizzozero, NPS Women’s Golf Association, expressed concern about needing assistance meeting the Golf Course Association’s requirements and disbanding of NPS Women’s Golf Association. She had concerns on what action needs to be taken with their existing funds, etc.
Response: Ms. Ryan replied that MWR would provide support to help the NPS Women’s Golf Association work through this issue. 9. With no other new items from the Advisory Board Members, Ms. Ryan adjourned the meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 4 March 1999, at 1000 in the Del Monte Room, Herrmann Hall, NAVPGSCOL.
