Computer Forensics Laboratory Manager(s), Naval Postgraduate School
Locations: Arlington, VA and Monterey, CA (openings at both locations)
Duties: The Computer Forensics Laboratory Manager is responsible for supporting faculty, research scientists and graduate students.
Responsible for managing a corpus of disk images, memory image and network packets that is currently 30TB in size.
Duties include:
- ingesting new media that is received from our contractors;
- maintaining order in the database;
- assuring that data is replicated to our remote sites;
- copying data to hard drives for distribution to our research partners;
- monitoring who gets which information
- handling data recalls.
Also responsible for managing the installation, updates, and maintenance of our computer forensic tools and research computer systems. This includes traditional computer support and maintenance (ordering, installations, upgrades, and trouble shooting), as well as system administration and trouble-shooting.
Qualifications: Familiarity with the operation and administration of Macintosh, Windows and Linux computers, including account management, network management, and downloading, configuring and installation open source software.
Should be able to write complex scripts in python and be familiar with C, C++, Makefiles, LaTeX, and Subversion.
Education: An associate or bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field such as computer science or computer engineering, or equivalent work experience. A master’s degree in computer science is preferred.
Research Associate(s)
To support research on disk image forensics. The ideal candidate will have experience with both operating systems and programming. Familiarity with the Python programming language, statistics, and management of the Windows operating system are also required. A Master’s degree or similar work experience is preferred. The position is an intermittent one starting in spring of FY 2011 with possibility for renewal based on funding. Research Associates, Naval Postgraduate School - Forensic Research Center, Naval Postgraduate School
Position Description/Overall Goal: Subject matter expertise for current and emerging research projects related to the information revolution in military and security affairs.
Expertise in:
• Generating information strategies, tactics and/or technologies used in military and security organizations.
• Working with leaders and community networks to bring new ideas into practice.
Significant experience:
• Working with US military in uniformed, government civilian and/or consultant capacity.
• Bridging civilian and military organizations
• Working with DARPA research programs.
Incumbent will:
• Work closely with Research Institute Director and/or project leaders
• Participate in workshops, symposia and brainstorming meetings focused on interpreting the strategic and tactical implications of the information revolution

Postdoctoral Fellowships and Research Scientists - Forensic Research Center, Naval Postgraduate School
Location: Northern Virginia (Arlington or Fairfax County)
The Department of Computer Science at the Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for Postdoctoral Candidates and Research Scientists for multiple positions in several areas of computer system forensics research, including the forensics of mass storage systems, computer memory analysis, network forensics, and document forensics.
Expertise in operating systems and programming is mandatory. Highly desirable is a skill in a third area, such as parallel or concurrent programming, virtualization, cloud computing, Human Language Technology (HLT), or applied data mining.
The successful candidate will conduct world-class research and develop software tools, techniques and systems, as well as be involved in dissemination of research results through conference and journal publications, conference presentations, and in-person meetings.
Qualifications:
- Candidates should have recently obtained a PhD in Computer Science.
- Candidates must be able to obtain a SECRET security clearance.

Forensic Software Developers - Forensic Research Center, Naval Postgraduate School
Location: Northern Virginia (Arlington or Fairfax County)
The Department of Computer Science at the Naval Postgraduate is looking for highly motivated software developers to expand its Forensic Research Center. Developers will work closely with research scientists in developing new techniques and tools to assist in the automated forensic analysis and processing of hard drives, USB memory sticks, optical storage devices, computer system memory, cell phones, and other data carrying devices.
Developers at the Forensic Research Center work with significant independence on software projects for which they have personal ownership. Developers must be able to understand the problem, design and architect a solution, and then develop a prototype solution.
We develop mostly Open Source software that we freely release to the worldwide forensics community. Nevertheless, successful applicants will be able to obtain and maintain a US security clearance at the SECRET level or above.
Applicants must be fluent in C++, Java and Python, able to develop for Windows or Linux. The ideal applicant will be able to develop for both Windows and Linux, be comfortable with EMACS, Eclipse, GNU autoconf tools, using and producing open source software.
Mobile Malware and Application Researcher - Forensic Research Center, Naval Postgraduate School
Location: Northern Virginia (Arlington or Fairfax County)
The Department of Computer Science at the Naval Postgraduate is looking for highly motivated software developers to expand its Forensic Research Center. Daily work includes analyzing mobile malware, discovering methodologies to protect against these threats, and help contribute to our growing collection of mobile malware. Additionally, you will help to discover new vulnerabilities and techniques in avoiding detection in mobile phones. You will also contribute to our growing collection of certified software from the various mobile platforms’ markets. This will involve writing automated collectors and scrapers to retrieve applications from the various application markets. Researching future threats and keeping up with the quickly changing mobile field is also part of the job.
Required Skills:
• Good knowledge of one or more major mobile platforms.
• Static malware analysis skills (ARM reverse engineering)
• Reverse engineering skills – assembly language (x86), disassemblers and debuggers.
• Good knowledge of at least one scripting language (preferably Python)
• Good verbal and written communication skills in English and able to interact easily with people of different cultures and background.
Desired Skills:
• Good knowledge on C/C++ and/or Java Programming Language.
• Experience using packet sniffers and analyzing network traffic: Wireshark, tcpdump, etc.
• Good knowledge on common Internet protocols (TCP/IP, SMTP, HTTP) and attacks.

The Research Associate will work under the direction of a faculty member to support reimbursable research activities at NPS. The Research Associate should typically have a Masters degree or a PhD in a field applicable to the research. Research Associates will be appointed by the Provost to terms not exceeding three years (pending availability of reimbursable funding) upon the recommendations by the Principal Investigator(s), the Chair/Dean/Director. Renewals are possible, pending satisfactory completion of duties and availability of reimbursable funding.
