Two SECNAV Energy Executive Education seminars are offered at NPS in 2013: 14-19 July and 22-29 September. Participants are selected and invited by the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations.

The purpose is arm senior Naval leaders with an understanding of energy issues so they can lead the culture change needed to improve Naval combat capability in the next decade.

Participants will learn:

  • Why energy is critical to our national security
  • Why energy is critical to the Department of Navy's mission
  • How the Department of Navy (DoN) can improve combat capability and mission effectiveness with changes in its approach to energy
  • How to apply Energy considerations in requirements generation, acquisitions and operations

Participants will learn:

  • Provide recommendations to senior Naval leaders on how to accelerate the culture change needed to meet USN energy goals
  • Be prepared to balance operational capability delivered through energy efficiency against more traditional capabilities.

During the interactive seminar, participants will engage with energy experts as well top leaders from DoD, DoN.  During a visit to Stanford University, they will participate in the Hoover Institute’s Energy Round Table hosted by Secretary of State George Shultz and former CNO Admiral Gary Roughead.  At Silicon Valley’s IDEO, they will apply design thinking approach to specific Naval energy challenges.

The design, development and prototype delivery of the SECNAV Executive Energy course is a Cebrowski Institute project.  The SECNAV Energy Executive Education Series is part of the NPS Defense Energy Program (nps.edu/energy/).
