GSOIS Faculty Recruiting Positions

Tenure-Track Computer Science Faculty Positions

It's hard to beat the location and atmosphere of the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. We are in Monterey, California, a scenic, uncongested Pacific coast city one hour's drive south of the Silicon Valley. We are an all graduate M.S. and Ph.D. program with top-notch U.S. and international military students and rich research opportunities in both the defense and civilian sectors. The Computer Science Department is looking for tenure-track faculty at all levels, especially in networking, information security, software engineering, critical infrastructure protection, mobile communication and machine learning/natural-language processing. Faculty teach graduate classes, supervise M.S. and Ph.D. theses, and conduct cutting-edge scientific research. The typical work load is 50% teaching and 50% research. The School has a strong commitment to research excellence, hosting about $100M externally-funded research annually. 

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field, and must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or in the process of becoming a permanent resident.

Lecturer Positions

The Department is also looking for candidates for the position of Lecture or Senior Lecturer. Candidates must hold a Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The primary duty is teaching of introductory computer science courses and selected advanced topics in areas such as networks, software engineering, databases, artificial intelligence, computer security, and graphics. Other duties may include support of research projects and administrative functions.

Research Associate

The Computer Science Department at the Naval Postgraduate School has an immediate opening for a Research Associate to assist in the development of semantic-search technology. A strong understanding of linguistics and of mathematical models of semantics is a necessity. Ability to program is desirable. A Ph.D. in Linguistics or Mathematical Linguistics or Computational Linguistics is preferred. The position is for the fiscal year 2008 (FY2008), but there is possibility for renewal based on funding. Research Associate

The Computer Science Department at the Naval Postgraduate School has an immediate opening for a Research Associate to assist in the study of the suitability of the Power PC Cell Broadband Engine for implementation of various encryption algorithms. We are interested in studying approaches to both increase performance and to provide “trusted, fail-safe” cryptography implemented in software on this platform. Candidates for this position should have at least Master’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience with a strong background in software/ operating systems development that is “close to the hardware.” Experience working on the Cell BE with multiple cores is a strong plus. Linux/Unix experience will also be useful. Candidates should be U.S citizens. Duties will include assisting in the procurement and set up of a test bed, assisting in the design of various algorithms, development of software test frames, software development and support in developing papers and customer presentations describing the work. GSOIS Recruiting—Faculty Positions in Information Sciences

The Faculty of the Information Sciences Department at the Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for tenure track, senior lecturer, and visiting faculty positions in the areas of Computer Networks and Telecommunications Systems, Information Warfare, Information Operations, C4I Systems, Collaborative Systems, Decision and Agent Technologies, Electronic Commerce and Acquisition, Information Architectures, Knowledge Management, and Web-based Information Systems. We are also interested in candidates with experience or interest in distance learning and Web-based course development.

Tenure track positions are at the assistant, associate or full professor level, depending upon the qualifications of the successful applicant. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in information sciences/systems or a related field and possess a strong interest in graduate teaching and research in any of the above areas. Applicants nearing completion of a doctoral program with an excellent record of teaching or demonstrated research capability will be considered. Senior lecturer positions require a graduate degree in the areas mentioned above; military experience is also desirable. Salary is commensurate with experience. The start date is the Fall Quarter 2006 or earlier.

The Department supports M.S. degrees in Information Systems Technology, Information Systems and Operations, Systems Technology, and Systems Engineering, as well as the Ph.D. in Information Sciences. The Department develops and maintains laboratories in Networks, Global Information Grid, Decision Support Systems, Software Metrics, and Internet-to-Sea. The Department also operates a number of research centers that are supported by reimbursable sponsors. Research Associate—Test and Evaluation for Navy Ops

Non-Tenure Track Faculty Position: The Operations Research Department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, California invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the Research Associate level. The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Position Description: The successful candidate will be a project coordinator and co-investigator on active funded research projects in the general area of technology and applied analytical research to support Navy decision makers. Specifically, programs supporting decisions related to the Maritime Headquarters and Operations Center and Concept of Operations Generation Program.

Qualifications: Successful candidates for this position must possess a minimum of a masters degree with active duty Navy experience at headquarters level. Candidates should have excellent writing, oral, interpersonal and organizational communications skills and be comfortable briefing senior Navy leadership. A successful candidate will be JPME qualified and familiar with the Joint Planning process for planning tool integration. Candidates should be a U.S. citizenship and currently hold or be able to obtain a Secret classification. Candidates will be expected to travel about 20 days per year to fleet sites with graduate students to conduct evaluation of research planning tools and presentation of those tools to senior Navy leadership.

The NPS Mission:
The mission of the Naval Postgraduate School is to “increase the combat effectiveness of U.S. and Allied armed forces and enhance the security of the U.S.A. through advanced education and research programs focused on the technical, analytical and managerial tools needed to confront defense related challenges of the future”. Faculty Positions in Statistics, Stochastic Modeling, and Simulation

The Operations Research Department at the Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for full-time faculty positions in the following three areas:

Tenure-track, non-tenure-track, and visiting positions at all ranks are available. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in operations research or a related field, and possess a strong research background and a keen interest in solving real-world problems.  Responsibilities include teaching and supervising at graduate levels and maintaining a program of original research.

NPS is a fully accredited technical university with a highly motivated student body consisting mainly of U.S. and foreign military officers. Research Associate in Operations Analysis

The Operations Research Department, The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), seeks qualified applicants for the position of Research Associate in Operations Analysis.

The ideal candidate will have qualifications in scientific research, laboratory management, and a masters degree (or equivalent) in operations research or a related field. Organizational and management skills are also important qualifications. Candidates without a masters degree will be considered for a Research Assistant position.

Faculty Position in Military Modeling

The Departments of Defense Analysis and Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California are seeking to fill two joint tenure track positions in military modeling. Appointments at all levels will be considered. The preferred candidate will have strong teaching and publication records in mathematical modeling, preferably with Department of Defense applications. Experience in simulation, game theory, and/or decision theory is a plus. The candidate must have an interest in interdisciplinary research. Position responsibilities include teaching, research, and thesis oversight. Students are typically mid-career military officers and Department of Defense civilians.

A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and U.S. citizenship are required. Military Operations Research Analyst

The Operations Research (OR) Department of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has two senior instructional faculty positions available for Military Operations Research Analysts starting in Oct 2005. The rank of the position will be Senior Lecturer or Lecturer.

The applicant will primarily teach military OR subjects, supervise master's thesis projects, and conduct military OR projects. The ideal applicant will have an established research program in military OR that will contribute to other research being conducted within the OR Department. An excellent teaching record at the graduate level is also expected. A graduate degree in operations research, or a related field, is required; and a Ph.D. is preferred.
