Robot Mission Rehearsal and Replay using the NPS Autonomous Unmanned Vehicle (AUV) Workbench

2/13/2008: 12:00—12:50 at Glasgow East 117

Don Brutzman of the MOVES Institute and Dept. of Information Sciences NPS will speak at this CS Department Seminar.

The Autonomous Unmanned Vehicle Workbench (AUVW) supports physics-based mission rehearsal, real-time task-level control of robot missions, and replay of recorded results in support of unmanned underwater, surface and air vehicles. Geographic information system (GIS) layers, a 2D geographic plot and an X3D visualization capability provide operators with multiple views and an improved understanding of robot operations.

Extensible 3D (X3D) graphics and other open data standards are used throughout, implemented using open-source software for maximum repeatability and usefulness. Software version control, autoinstallers, online software update capability, bug tracking and an archived mailing list enable group usage of shared assets. Recent NPS student studies and theses from a large academic research archive will also be summarized.

Speaker Bio: Don Brutzman is an Associate Professor in the Modeling Virtual Environments & Simulation (MOVES) Institute and Information Sciences Department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). His research interests include underwater robotics, real-time 3D computer graphics, artificial intelligence and high-performance networking. He chairs the Undersea Warfare Academic Committee and USW curriculum at NPS. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Graphics (SIGGRAPH) and the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). He serves on the board on the newly formed World Wide Consortium for the Global Information Grid (W2COG). He is a board member of the non-profit Camp SEA Lab Monterey Bay, which operates a youth-oriented year-round residential science camp. He is a founding member of the non-profit Web3D Consortium Board of Directors. Previously, he organized and led the SIGGRAPH Online 2001 team, designing and developing a huge audio/video/Web/XML information archive. Currently he leads the Extensible 3D (X3D) Working Group for the ISO X3D/VRML Specification, cochairs the newly formed X3D Earth Working Group, and directs development of numerous research projects as part of the Extensible Modeling and Simulation Framework (XMSF). Together with Len Daly he is coauthor of X3D Graphics for Web Authors, published April 2007 by Morgan Kaufmann.
