Student Projects:

Systems Engineering group projects have been performed by students in several programs: Systems Engineering Analysis (SEA), Total Ship Systems Engineering (TSSE), and the distance-learning MSSE program.

Students in the newly-formed MSSE program will work on a group project, in addition to writing a thesis as an individual.

SEA group projects:

Students in the SEA program pursue a systems engineering project that analyzes solutions to a complex military operational problem. Students in the resident MSSE program may work on a technology project affiliated with the SEA project or may be assigned to work on a project similar to a typical SEA project.

Titles of past SEA projects are listed below. Project details may be found at the Meyer Institute web site: www.nps.edu/Research/Meyer/Content/ISP.html.

1998/1999  “21st Century Challenge to U.S. Navy Power Projection – The Enemy’s Area Denial System 2020”
2001 “Coalition Negation of Area Denial in the Pacific Theater”
2001 “Crossbow Distributed Aviation Concept”
2002 “Expeditionary Warfare”
2003 “Expeditionary Warfare Force Protection”
2004 “Expeditionary Warfare Logistics”
2005 “Maritime Domain Protection”
2005 “Littoral ASW in 2025”
2006

Maritime Threat Response”
“Rapid Response Command and Control”
“Ship Anti-Ballistic Response”
“Joint Fire Support in 2020:  Development of a Future Joint Fires”
“System Architecture for Immediate, Unplanned Targets”
“Riverine Operations 2015”

2007 "Port Security Strategy 2012”
“Riverine Sustainment 2012”

TSSE group projects:

Students taking the ship systems track in the resident MSSE program will take a number of common courses with students in the TSSE program, which is offered in the Mechanical and Astronautical Engineering department.

TSSE students have been executing systems engineering projects resulting in complete ship designs on an annual basis since 1992. Depending on the combined numbers of students, the MSSE Ship Systems students will either work with TSSE students on a single ship design or pursue a different ship design project that is similar in every respect to a typical TSSE project.

Details on the TSSE program and links to copies of its final reports may be found at the TSSE web site: http://www.nps.edu/academics/gseas/tsse/ .  Titles of a few relevant projects are listed below:

1997   “A Short Take-off/Vertical Landing (STOVL) Aircraft Carrier (S-CVX)”
1998 “Maritime Prepositioning Force 2010 and Beyond”
1999 “The Surface Warfare Test Ship”
2000 “Sea Lance Littoral Warfare Small Combatant System”
2001 “SEA ARCHER: Distributed Aviation Platform”
2002 “SEA FORCE: A Sea Basing Platform”
2003 “SEA SWAT:  A Littoral Combat Ship for Sea Base Protection”
2004 “Joint ACCESS:  High-Speed Assault Connector (HSAC) for Amphibious Seabasing Operations and Joint Expeditionary Logistics”
2005 “Sea TENTACLE – Track, Engage, & Neutralize Threats - Asymmetric & Conventional in the Littoral Environment”
2006 “TSUNAMI: A Maritime Threat Response System”
2007 “SABR: Ship Anti-Ballistic Response”

MSSE (distance learning) group projects

For the past several years, the SE department has enrolled students from a number of organizations in distance-learning MSSE programs. Students in this program have traditionally performed projects that directly relate to projects at their home agency.

The host organizations, titles of past and present DL MSSE student projects, and sponsors (if applicable) include:

Port Hueneme Cohort 1    “Littoral Combatant Ship Self Defense System”
Port Hueneme  Cohort 2 “Littoral Combatant Ship Modular WeaponsSystem”
MCTSSA   “System of Systems Integration Center” (sponsored by MCTSSA)
Crane/Corona “Network Centric Weapons Resource Management”
Port Hueneme Cohort 3/Keyport  “Coalition FORCEnet Study 0” (sponsored by ONR/SPAWAR)
Port Hueneme  Cohort 4        “Coalition FORCEnet Study 1” (sponsored by ONR/SPAWAR)
Port Hueneme  Cohort 4        “FORCEnet/Open Architecture Study” (sponsored by PEO/IWS)
Port Hueneme  Cohort 4        “UHF Radar Study”
Port Hueneme  Cohort 4        “N-LOS Integration in DDG-51 Study” (sponsored by CRADA with Raytheon)
San Diego Space Group  “TACSAT Study” (sponsored by SPAWAR/USAF)
San Diego Space Group  “FORCEnet Architecture Study” (sponsored by DISA)
