Ocean Acoustic Observatory Scientific Projects

National Ocean Partnership Projects

Marine Mammal Acoustic Survey

This project examines the sensitivity to marine mammals to environmental and man-made noise. We will use the NPS Ocean Acoustic Observatory to detect and track marine mammals, as well as collect corroborative shipboard near-field acoustic data to determine if current Navy assets can be used to provide environmental impact information for these animals. This project was funded by the Office of Naval Research, 1997-1999.

California Coastal Current Study

This project involves long-term acoustic monitoring of moored SOFAR and tomographic sources to measure travel time perturbations of the transmissions.

Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Monitoring (CTBT)

The Pt. Sur Ocean Acoustic Observatory was the first U.S. hydroacoustic monitoring station used in the development of the International Data Center for the Nuclear Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and successfully detected the 1994 French tests from the French Polynesia.
