Third International Workshop on Monsoons (IWM-III)
2-6 November 2004, Hangzhou, China

 

Following the approval of the 55th session of the WMO Executive Council (Geneva, May 2003) and at the kind invitation of the Government of China, the Third WMO International Workshop on Monsoons (IWM-III) will be held in Hangzhou, China, from 2 to 6 November 2004. This series of quadrennial workshops emphasizes the interactions between researchers and operational forecasters on issues of common interest.

The third workshop is being organized under the WMO Tropical Meteorology Research Programme (TMRP), jointly by the TMRP International Panel for East Asian Monsoon, CAS Project M2 (Long-term Asian/African monsoon studies) and Project M3 (American monsoon studies). Co-sponsors include China Meteorological Administration, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. The main objective is to provide a forum for discussion between researchers and forecasters on the current status of monsoon forecasting and on priorities and opportunities of monsoon research, particularly to:

(a) Update forecasters on the latest research findings and forecasting technology

(b) Update researchers on monsoon analysis and forecasting

(c) Identify basic and applied research priorities and opportunities

(d) Identify opportunities and priorities for acquiring observations

(e) Discuss the approach of a web-based training document in order to update forecasters
      on developments of direct relevance to monsoon forecasting

The Workshop will cover topics on all monsoon regions and time scales (meso-, synoptic, intraseasonal, climate). The International Committee will prepare review materials for each topic for discussion at the Workshop. Other participants will present contributed papers. At the conclusion, a report including the reviews, discussions and recommendations on monsoon research and forecasting will be submitted to WMO.           Zhejiang Xizi Hotel

The venue, Zhejiang Xizi Hotel (37 Nanshan Road, Hangzhou, China. Tel:86-571-87021888), located by the famous West Lake, was converted from a former resort used by Chairman Mao Zedong. Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was received here in a state banquet in February 1972, during President Nixon's first visit to China.
