Instruction Opportunities for Contractors: The Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, California
has occasional need for contractors to teach selected courses.
Since the instruction needed depends on the desires and availability of
funding for the originally scheduled instructors, the needs for this
instruction becomes available only one quarter prior to the needed instruction.
The qualifications for the contractors includes an advanced degree at least
at the Master's level in Electrical and Computer Engineering (or Electrical
Engineering or Computer Engineering), knowledge of the theory and subject
matter of the course, experience in conducting and instructing laboratory
sessions (for those course with labs), and ability to tutor and counsel adult
learners. Successful teaching experience in higher education is highly
desirable. Candidates should have good writing, oral, interpersonal and organizational
communications skills. U.S.
citizenship and eligibility for a security clearance are required for some
courses.
Although most of our courses are for resident students at the NPS campus,
candidates might be expected to teach both on-campus classes and distance
learning classes delivered by VTE or via the Web.
The NPS Mission: The mission of the Naval Postgraduate
School is to “increase the combat
effectiveness of U.S. and
Allied armed forces and enhance the security of the U.S.A. through advanced education
and research programs focused on the technical, analytical and managerial tools
needed to confront defense related challenges of the future”. Consistent with
this mission the ECE Department seeks to provide students with the highest
quality and most defense relevant education available in electrical and
computer engineering.
Institution and Setting: The Naval
Postgraduate School
(http://www.nps.navy.mil), established
in 1909, is the Navy's Corporate
University and offers
graduate programs at all levels for officers of the United States Armed
Services, civilian employees of defense laboratories and officers and civilians
from Allied nations. The NPS has approximately 1500 resident students enrolled
in graduate degree programs, as well as non-resident students served by a
distance learning program. The ECE Department has 32 tenure track and
non-tenure track civilian and military faculty members who spend about
half-time teaching and half-time performing sponsored research.
The park-like 144-acre NPS campus is located on the Monterey
Peninsula, adjacent to the waters of Monterey Bay
and only minutes from the Monterey
Peninsula Airport.
The area offers a pristine environment of unparalleled scenic beauty, parks, restaurants,
art galleries and cultural events. Other local research and educational
institutions include the California State University at Monterey Bay, the
University of California at Santa Cruz, Monterey Institute of International
Studies, the Defense Language Institute, Stanford University's Hopkins Marine
Station, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing Marine
Laboratories, the Naval Research Laboratory (West) and Monterey Peninsula
College.
Contract terms: Contract Instructors remain as independent
contractors. They are not NPS or government employees and receive no
benefits from NPS. Contracts are
awarded for the delivery of a course, including preparation of class materials,
delivery of class lectures, delivery of laboratory or problem sessions,
advising and counseling students on course material, preparation and delivery
of examination material, and grading of the course. Any travel expenses must be
included in the quotation; they will not be separately reimbursed.
