As described on other pages, each ABET-accredited program is required to perform assessments of their Program Objectives and Program Outcomes. These assessments are to provide insight into whether the Objectives and Outcomes are being achieved and to provide a mechanism for diagnosing opportunities for program improvement to better meet the Objectives and Outcomes.
At the Naval Postgraduate School, we are currently using several tools to perform this assessment. They currently include...
- annual surveys of graduates
- quarterly surveys of graduating students
- annual surveys of our ECE faculty
- quarterly surveys of the quality of the thesis presentation and written thesis by the advisor(s), second reader, and ECE Chair
- the biennial Curriculum review process
Data are gathered in variety of formats (e.g., web-based survey and analysis, paper forms, email forms), reduced by graphical and statistical analysis, and passed to faculty committees responsible for their piece of the assessment. These faculty committees have established metrics that attempt to measure the achievement of the desired Objectives and Outcomes. The Faculty Committees formulate recommendations for improvements to the program. Most of these recommendations go to the ECE Department Curriculum Committee which considers them, recommends implementations, and passes the recommended implementation on to the Course Coordinators, course instructors, ECE Department committees, ECE Chair, ECE program Officer, or other responsible parties. Changes are made and the cycle repeats itself with the surveys identifying whether the desired result has been achieved.
