New Book on Defense Acquisition Process Praised
On Tuesday, October 25th 2008 The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) announced the publication of an important new book, Management of Defense Acquisition Projects, by Rene G. Rendon and Keith F. Snider that thoroughly explains the defense acquisition process and provides the reader with a comprehensive guide to the many disciplines and activities involved.
Dr. Rene Rendon is a senior lecturer in acquisition management at the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif. He has been recognized with the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Officer in Contracting Award, the National Contract Management Association (NCMA) National Education Award, and the NCMA Outstanding Fellow Award.
Dr. Keith Snider is an associate professor of public administration and management at the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy at the Naval Postgraduate School. Earlier this year he received the Khi V. Thai Research Scholar of the Year award from the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing.
Other NPS faculty members contributing chapters to the book were GSBPP Senior Lecturers Mike Boudreau, Phil Candreva, John Dillard, and Brad Naegle and lecturer Lt. Col.Bryan Hudgens USAF as well as Associate Professor of Systems Engineering Thomas Huynh and Associate Professor of Information Sciences John Osmundson.
Lean Six Sigma Class Graduation
The third class of Lean Six Sigma Green Belts graduated on 13 June 2008. Logistics students with a comprehensive background in process improvement comprised the group. This class is the capstone educational requirement that will lead to a Green Belt certification upon completion of two Lean Six Sigma projects at each student’s next duty assignment.
Dr. Uday Apte (not in picture), Dr. Keebom Kang (left), and COL (ret) Mike Boudreau (right) from the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy conducted the course over a two-week period. Students were required to take a final exam, and results will be forwarded to their next command along with a certificate of completion of educational requirements. During the ceremony, Dean Bob Beck (Second on left) acknowledged the accomplishments of the students. Lean Six Sigma Graduates—Shane Tallant, Necati Ertekin (with wife Larisa), and Jason Warner—are pictured along with Dean Beck and participating faculty.
GSBPP Student Awards -- June 2008
A number of GSBPP students received academic achievement awards from GSBPP and NPS. Two of the top achievers, LT Benjamin P. Grant, USN LCDR Christopher T. Kovack, USN, are pictured with GSBPP Dean Bob Beck.They are co-recipients of the Louis D. Liskin Award for Excellence in Business and Public Policy. Between them LCDR Kovack and LT Grant received 11 awards.
Both students join the company of fellow GSBPP students LCDR Noel Cabral, USN; 1st LT. Volkan Karaca, Turkish Air Force; LCDR Shane Tallant, USN; and Major Christos Zahos, Hellenic Air Force, who are graduating with distinction (GPA 3.97 or higher).
Conrad Scholars Thesis Presentations in D.C.
LT Tiffany Hill, USN and LT Benjamin Grant, USN briefed their theses to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Financial Management and Comptroller, (ASN (FM&C)), DR. Douglas Brook, and the Director of the Office of the Budget, RADM Stanley Bozin, USN on 4 June 2008, in Washington DC.
LT Hill's thesis is titled: "An Analysis of the Organizational Structures Supporting PPBE within the Military Departments"
LT Grant's Thesis is titled: "Density as a Cost Driver in Naval Submarine Design and Procurement"

Four GSBPP professors were honored recently with Time in Service Awards. Professors Frank Barrett, Mark Eitelberg, Joe San Miguel, and Goerge Thomas received certificates for 25 to 30 years of service.
Posthumous Award to John Shank
 In honor of the many contributions Professor John Shank made over a long productive career, The Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association presented its “Distinguished Contributions to Management Accounting Award” posthumously to former GSBPP Visiting Professor John K. Shank on January 11, 2008.
The award presentation took place at the Association's annual research conference in Long Beach, CA. John’s widow, Diane Shank received the award and his son, University of Minnesota Professor J.B. Shank, spoke about his father’s professional contributions. Professor Joe San Miguel, a longtime friend of John Shank represented GSBPP at the ceremony.
Professor Shank died on March 30th, 2006. Popular with his students he was honored by them with the dedication of the classroom that was home base for him during his time at NPS.
