 Program Overview

The PhD in Systems Engineering degree is offered as a full-time resident program or a part-time hybrid-resident program. The part-time hybrid-resident program courses are delivered in various means which include but are not limited to the Internet either by a web-conferencing tool or asynchronously online using NPS' SAKAI course management system.

 Program Requirements and Standard Curriculum

PhD in Systems Engineering part-time students must meet a resident requirement of 2 weeks a quarter either on the NPS campus or at an approved NPS embedded faculty location (currently NAS Patuxent River, National Capital Region, Greater San Diego area). Other resident type arrangements may be possible and will be explored during the candidate application process and academic review.

Each PhD candidate will have a tailored course of study but a typical part-time candidate will need:

  • A minimum of 48 total credits (3 years at one course a quarter or 1.5 years at two courses a quarter) above the master's level
  • A minimum of 12 credits of dissertation research (typically 2 years with 24 total credits dependent on candidate dedicated time to research)

 Eligibility and Admissions Standards

The following are eligible for this program:

  • US Military Officers
  • US Government Civilians
  • International Students**

**International Students: Ensure that you read and understand the eligibility requirements and application process.

NPS is mission funded to provide tuition-free graduate education to active duty naval officers (USN and USMC), on a space available basis. Additional course fees may be required. The availability of seats for naval officers in distance learning programs is determined at the program level.

All others MUST be financially sponsored by their command or company.

The total tuition for a typical part-time student taking either 1 course a quarter or 2 courses a quarter followed by 2 years of dissertation research is $84,000. Payment schedules for either option are provided in the tuition letter.
