Requirements for Online Classes

 

Requirements for Asynchronous Classes

 Skill Requirements

In order to take an NPS Asynchronous course, you will need to have at least basic computer skills. In addition to the following skills, you may need knowledge of software specific to the course you are taking. The instructor will inform you of any such skills you will need to have.

Basic Computer Skills

  • Word Processing
  • File Management
  • Backing Up Files
  • Virus Screening

Basic Internet Skills

  • Knowing how to connect to the Internet (via an Internet Service Provider or ISP)
  • Using a Web Browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Netscape etc)
  • Using a Search Engine (Yahoo, Google, etc)
  • Downloading and Installing Software
  • Sending and Receiving E-Mail

 Technology Requirements

 Internet Access

To participate in NPS Distance Learning courses, you must have access to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP), Broadband preferred

 Hardware Requirements

If you are interested in taking an on-line course, some standard guidelines are listed below:

  • Pentium 4 or above
  • 256+ MB RAM
  • 40+ GB Hard Drive
  • 17"+ Monitor with 1024x768 or higher
  • DSL, cable modem or network connectivity
  • Windows 2000, XP or above
  • Mac G3 or above
  • 256+ MB RAM
  • 40+ GB Hard Drive
  • 17"+ Monitor with 1024x768 or higher
  • DSL, cable modem or network connectivity
  • Macintosh OS 10.2 or higher

 Software Requirements

  • Web Browser
    Internet Explorer 6.0+, Safari, Firefox, etc.
  • E-mail
  • Word Processing
    Word processing is a necessity. On-line students should be prepared to save word processed files. MS Word is the standard. You can also use plain (ASCII) text files.
  • Flash Player
    You will need to have the latest version of the Macromedia Flash plug-in installed to view many of the interactive elements in NPS Asynchronous courses.
  • Other
    Some courses may require other software programs in addition to those named here. You will need to have administrator privileges on your computer to install software as needed.
