Strategic Insights (SI) is a quarterly online journal published by the Center on Contemporary Conflict, Department of National Security Affairs, Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

We publish scholarly articles as well as viewpoints that address issues of current interest to the makers and executors of US national security policy. We are particularly interested in articles addressing homeland security, WMD/WME proliferation, regional and internal conflict, and the contemporary role of US security forces. The journal seeks articles that will make our readers think, generate discussion, and gain new insight into the challenges and opportunities confronting US policymakers and military operators. Views that run counter to the conventional wisdom or official US government policy are welcomed.

Strategic Insights publishes four major types of articles:

  • Feature Articles: Scholarly analyses of a current topic or country /region in the news. Our articles draw heavily from academic and policy journals, summarizing or evaluating major issues of interest to our readers. Our articles offer policy-relevant conclusions and focus on the substance of issues at hand rather than esoteric arguments.
  • Document Analyses: Analyses of declassified documents or translations of contemporary pieces of import with accompanying analysis. Declassified document analyses should shed historical light on a contemporary issue or be timed to coincide with an event's anniversary. When feasible, translation analysis should be interspersed throughout the translation as commentary. These analyses should highlight the significance of primary-source documents for contemporary policymakers, military professionals, and scholars.
  •
  • Viewpoints: Occasional, shorter essays from noted scholars and policy-makers that are more informal than our feature articles but nonetheless provide insights into subjects that would be valuable to our readers.
  •
  • Book Reviews: Analytical reviews of new books that fit the scope of the journal.
