Captain Bernard Wang was commission in 1988 after graduation from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Additionally, he holds a Juris Doctor from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law (1995), and a Masters of Arts in National Security Affairs and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College (2009). He is also a graduate of the Defense Language Institute (2008).
Before his designation as a Foreign Area Officer, CAPT Wang served 19 years as a Surface Warfare Officer. His operational assignments included USS FLETCHER (DD-992), Navy Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 104, Naval Control of Shipping Organization Unit 220, and Navy Convoy Commodore Staff 120. He also had staff assignments with Commander, Seventh Fleet, U.S. Pacific Command, Training Command Pacific, and Navy Personnel Command where he was the Deputy Director for Career Progression, Promotion, Performance and Security (PERS-8B). His last assignment as a Surface Warfare Officer was Chief Staff Officer, Fleet Activities Sasebo, Japan.
Captain Wang was designated a Foreign Area Officer in 2007, his assignments as a FAO included language training at Defense Language Institute (Tagalog) where he graduated with honors, and attendance at Naval War College in Newport, RI. From May 2009 to May 2011, he was selected and served as the Navy Foreign Area Officer Community Manager at Bureau of Naval Personnel Three, Military Community Management in Millington, TN.
Captain Wang is a qualified Asia-Pacific region Foreign Area Officer with Mandarin, Cantonese, and Tagalog (Filipino) as his main foreign languages. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy Achievement Medal, and various service medals and ribbons.
