Biography
Barry S. Zellen is a specialist on arctic security and circumpolar politics, with a keen interest in international relations theory and strategic studies. He lived in the Arctic region from 1988 until 2000, where he worked in the field of indigenous language preservation, managing several indigenous-language media organizations sponsored by the Northern Native Broadcast Access Program (NNBAP), in the Government of Canada’s Department of Canadian Heritage.
During his time in the Far North, Zellen served as General Manager of Northern Native Broadcasting, Yukon (NNBY); Executive Director of the Native Communications Society of the NWT (NCS-NWT); and Managing Editor of the Inuvialuit newspaper, Tusaayaksat, published by the Inuvialuit Communications Society (ICS). Zellen also published Cabin Fever, a regional newspaper serving the villages of the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, from 1998-2000, and from 2000-08, he published the pan-northern news portal, TheSourdough.com.
In 2001, Zellen founded TechnologyInnovator.com, an editorial and strategic communications consulting company specializing in web publishing, e-newsletters, internal communications, and editing. His clients ranged from blue-chip companies including HP and IBM to smaller start-ups and tech publications. In 2002, he became Homeland Security & Counterterrorism Correspondent for Intersec, and in 2003 became the author of HP's daily Competitive Intelligence in Action (CIA) Report, in which he analyzed news, events, and trends relating to enterprise technology, distributed to over 4,000 HP managers and employees daily. In 2004, Zellen started editing the Strategic Insights e-journal and became Web Commando" for the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School. He also directs the Arctic Security Project at NPS, which examines the geostrategic implications of the polar thaw.
Zellen is the author of Breaking the Ice: From Land Claims to Tribal Sovereignty in the Arctic (Lexington Books 2008), the first book in a multi-volume series from the Arctic Security Project, a long-term research project exploring the transformation of the Arctic region and its impact on international security. Zellen has also completed a sequel to Breaking the Ice, called On Thin Ice: The Inuit, the State and the Challenge of Arctic Sovereignty (Lexington Books 2009), which continues his discussion of Arctic sovereignty and the interplay of state and sub-state dynamics along the Arctic coast. Zellen is also the author of Arctic Doom, Arctic Boom: The Geopolitics of Climate Change in the Arctic (Praeger, Security and the Environment series, 2009) which examines the theoretical and strategic implications of a post-Arctic world as climate change, and in particular a polar thaw, transforms world geopolitics.
He has also authored a four-volume book set on the rise and fall of the modern state, as imagined by political and strategic theorists across the ages, under contract with Praeger for release in early 2011: States of Mind: The Realist Tradition and Foundation of Western Order. In addition, he has authored a strategic biography of Bernard Brodie, America's Clausewitz: Bernard Bodie, the Bomb, and the Birth of the Bipolar World and a work on technology and homeland security, 9/12: Restoring Order in the Age of Complex Warfare.
Zellen was educated at Harvard, where he earned his B.A. in Government (1984) magna cum laude, and U.C. Berkeley, where he earned his M.A. in Political Science (1985). He has received various research grants and fellowships including a MacArthur Fellowship (1985-86), an Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation research fellowship (1986-87), and a Canadian Institute for International Peace and Security Northern Security Research Grant (1991-93). He has taught at Arctic College, the Center for Northern Studies, and Wesleyan University.
