Civil-Military Relations in Pakistan

Dr. Rifaat Hussain, visiting professor at the Stanford University and the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), visited the CCC on 8 May 2003. Dr. Hussain is Chairman of the Department of Defense and Strategic Studies (DSS), Quad-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan.

Dr. Hussain during his visit gave a talk on "Civil-Military Relations in Pakistan: Recent Developments." Students of the South Asia curriculum and members of the National Security Affairs Department attended the talk. Dr. Hussain argued that the outcome of the current debate on Pakistan's executive structure would have long-term implications for Pakistan's politics and society. He observed that the current debate centers around whether Pervez Musharraf should continue to serve as Army Chief as well as President. After his talk, Dr. Hussain interacted with the students and faculty, addressing other issues related to South Asia security.
