The 1999 Kargil Conflict
Workshop Report
Monterey, CA, Aug 28-29, 2001
Several Indian, Pakistani, and American scholars gathered to discuss the scope of a new CCC project to examine the causes, conduct, and consequences of this 1999 limited war between India and Pakistan. The CCC Kargil Project is designed to provide a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the factors that affect the role of nuclear weapons and deterrence in India-Pakistan relations. Findings of this research will be relevant to South Asia scholars and to analysts and policy makers seeking to understand the dynamics of deterrence in the modern era. The results of the project will appear in scholarly works to be published in Summer 2004.
